This virus has not got a proper hold in the Americas or Africa yet but it will. These populations will keep the threat of repeat outbreaks globally as a high probability.
i still dont understand, maybe im dense. But wouldn't it be prudent to stop many tens of thousands of people congregating in one place with an infectious disease doing the rounds, no matter where we are on the curve?
Listening to the briefing live now.Ireland going into lockdown from 6pm today till 29 March
Varadkar: schools colleges and childcare facilities will close from tomorrow, outdoor gatherings more than 500 shd be cancelled. Where possible work from home, business meetings on line where possible.
I know they are in the spotlight a lot at the moment but I’m not sure the World Health Organisation needs to tour the UK. Only right to scrap it.The Who at the MEN on Monday postponed until later in the year
Also a lot of the measures are recommendations at the moment. Restaurants pubs etc., aren't being closed but social distancing is being recommended.Ok. Partial lockdown :)
Systems still need people to function. It’s more about limiting contact and slowing the spread so systems can still cope.
On a cold logical numbers basis: yes
On a 'don't annoy people by causing disruption before it's necessary' basis: debatable.
The government approach seems to be not to contain it, which would need Italy-type action, but instead to 'manage' the growth.
Supposed to be going to the one in Dublin next Wednesday. Doubt it now.The Who at the MEN on Monday postponed until later in the year
Yet the UK want to be seen as some kind of heroes by doing absolutely fuck all against it. Pressure going to be unbearable on Johnson if many more die soon.Listening to the briefing live now.
Knew it was coming. I'll be heading home shortly and working from home until further notice.
I was of the opinion that I would do this anyway from next week, as I'm travelling three hours a day on public transport which is basically a petri dish.
The wife's parents are elderly and in bad health and she is pretty much doing the job of a carer as well as her own job.
It would only be a matter of time before I'd pick it up and bring it home if this got out of hand.
I welcome these measures.
The question of Cheltenham has just arisen and returning race goers at the press briefing.
Nothing specific and not addressed directly but a daily meeting and briefing to be held from here on in, whereby the likes of events abroad and population movements will be monitored.
There is also a recommendation that indoor gatherings of 100 or more should not go ahead if not necessary.(Concerts/museums/pubs etc.) unless social distancing can be assured.
There is panic buying starting already and is being reported in all the major supermarkets. Retailers have assured the government that the supplies are there and there is no need to stock pile.
Human nature being what it is though. People will do what people do.
Particularly when it means anyone wanting to get to America from somewhere that is banned now has to come through the UK.Makes me laugh that the USA ban all travel from Europe with the exception of the one country that appears to be doing fuck all about containing the spread of the virus.
What is?Well, either a brave or very stupid decision from Johnson that. How many are we wanting to die Boris for any sort of action to be taken?
Cheltenham going ahead is utter fucking insanity.what is the rationale for letting, for example, Cheltenham go ahead this week?
i can see why shutting the schools, businesses etc all in one go is a massive strain all at once, surely stopping cheltenham just makes sense?
Anything he says or does, apparently. What is?
Particularly when it means anyone wanting to get to America from somewhere that is banned now has to come through the UK.
That made me chuckle tooMakes me laugh that the USA ban all travel from Europe with the exception of the one country that appears to be doing fuck all about containing the spread of the virus.
As they do every year from various flu virus.

as i've tried to say previously in this thread, the number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 alone is meaningless. What would be useful would be total numbers so we could see what % increase there is from the normal seasonal statistics.
It isnt reflective of the Cheltenham festival to call it a leisure activity. Horse racing is fundamentally bent and the significant financial interests of many involved in it depends on it going ahead. The form of horses running it will have been manipulated and managed for months to maximise profit. Wealthy and influential people are involved in this and this means it will go ahead as it is too important to them.i understand the need to manage a curve, and also the need to manage people's anger or economic impacts, but i cannot reconcile some leisure activity such as Cheltenham going ahead. Just cant!
And to get to the US will have to state where they have previously been and when, so no, people from Italy for example, won't be flying to the UK then hoping onto a flight to the US.Particularly when it means anyone wanting to get to America from somewhere that is banned now has to come through the UK.
