Is Boris just being frank, or is he incompetent?
Probably won’t make much difference in the end. I think we’re fucked as we don’t have ave the facilities to deal with this.
But I have to say I prefer our approach so far, than yours.
I just don’t get what delaying the inevitable by a week is going to to do for you. This is escalating Europe wide and if ever a coordinated approach worldwide was needed now is the time.
The timescales of the benefits Boris or his advisers are on about just don’t add up in my view.

A bit political I know but it’s like you’re determined to be different.

This looks like it is long term. Six months maybe before you see the herd immunity that is desired.
The messages coming out of the UK at the moment are conflicting in my opinion.
I understand the logic, but actually think the conclusion of lowering the spike into a tableau, so to speak, is counter intuitive to the approach you are taking.
If I’m wrong in that, then I think the communication of the message is poor as it is not taking the vast majority of the population along with it.
This really is a time for community and all should be pulling in the same direction.

Or maybe they have data today that indicates it's the right time. They said they would be reviewing everything on a day by day basis.
What they have from last night when they supposedly talked to the fa and the prem from a cobra meeting was info on al lthe players and teams being positive and isolating, they had no choice but on the day they said they were not shutting down sport because mass gatherings were no problem they have had to accept it

But it's not a U-turn. It's exactly the staged introduction that was spelled out in the briefing. After that there will be isolation of the elderly and then more severe social distancing. It's exactly the plan outlined and it's a reflection of the estimate of true number of infections.

It may be the ‘plan’ but you don’t hold a presser on the 12th about ‘herd immunity’, managing the spread of infection and please carry on as normal and then start declaring emergency powers and banning events of 500 plus the next day. I mean have we suddenly reached the ‘magic’ infection figure to beat the second wave? How would we know either way? If it is all part of the plan why not say so yesterday that we are will announce emergency steps today? Why allow the media to give the impression it is a u-turn?

Is it not in reality that we wanted people to carry on as normal but people, businesses etc said ‘sod that’ and started to shut down anyway so the Govt has co-opted that decision in order to remain ‘in charge’?

So the available data has so drastically deviated from expected trends today as to lead them to introduce measures they indicated would be saved until the right moment... yesterday.

This is no reflection on you specifically, but speaking as a data scientist, in the technical language common to my field...

That is ****ing unlikely.

It's fluid situation. Either way, if it's a decision for the greater good, where's the problem ?
Because time is critical here. They prevaricated yesterday when other countries were acting decisively. It doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence that they have a coherent strategy.

My understanding from the Telegraph article is that this change is to come in from next weekend, not immediately.

People should not listen to the government, who really haven't given any advice except wash your hands and self isolate if you feel ill. I realise that may be all they can say but for those able to do so there is more.

Don't go into crowds of people. Don't use public transport. Work from home if possible. Only go into public areas if absolutely necessary, for food or medical reasons. This will be a bit stir crazy granted but it's better than getting infected or infecting others.

As a matter of interest. Which one of those countries would you rather be in right now ?

You are taking the p1ss aren't you?

I would hope/imagine that they are continually receiving and reviewing data and follow where that points. I understand your scepticism as it is the Tories and I would probably think the same if it was Labour to be honest.

I understand that, hence I didn’t say it was being implemented immediately.

But the decision to implement was 24 hours later, which means a sufficiently drastic deviation of trends in available data as suggested is very unlikely.

And if they were planning to do this based on available data/trends yesterday, why not include it in a schedule of implementation?

It makes very little sense from an analytics or planning point of view apart from an immediate escalation that wasn’t necessarily planned yesterday.

It very much seems a reactive — rather than a proactive — action, even though they claimed their strategy was the latter sort yesterday.

Nonsense. They said yesterday the time is not right. Then all of a sudden, today it is? That’s not part of a plan, that’s an admission that he is driving us into a national disaster of epic proportions and a hasty attempt to put it right. But it’s likely too late. He’s a fucking dick.
