Schools all closed here in Spain with lockdown due to start monday. Sunday is usual day for visits to grandparents by kids and their parents so that stops.
Government reckons that kids are the main source of contamination for the elderly who are obviously more vulnerable.
We’ve made a conscious decision not to visit the mother-in-law just in case.

Every cloud....

It’s disrupting some of the plans I made earlier in the week for elder care (as now some of the middle-aged members of the family around Zaragoza are now not going to be available) but I thought it might be coming so I have a few contingencies left.

I do think it is needed based on the current situation but I just hope other coming actions don’t completely upend my backup plans, as well.

Just need to get a few of the lazyas**** younger members of the family to pull their weight whilst still protecting the older members from infection.

It seems animal testing of a possible vaccine is being skipped in the USA and we will likely follow suit i assume. That still leaves the company developing it (Moderna pharmaceuticals) saying a year until it is ready for use. Keep in mind this is a start up biotech company who could be using cynical claims to raise their stock price. The fact these new kids on the block are at this stage with established companies not making such claims should see people treat the claims with a certain amount of suspicion.

You can be sure Astra Zeneca, Sigma Aldridge Fluka etc are going flat out themselves with their sub contractors going like the clappers to get a vaccine made to; however no bold claims from them and they have access to some of the best brains in the organic chemistry industry.

they're not more dontgivefucks than Italians and Spaniards and they went home. People will change their habits when it's necessary.
That Independent article on a previous page says younger Italians are not listening to the social distancing rules and are getting this virus in greater numbers than previously.

There is no way a start up is getting in on the vaccine act,GSK will be the ones making it i'm sure,no step will be skipped,it is very regulated to make it safe for humans

Hope so, I’ve quite a few shares in them

On a more serious note you are wrong.
I remember when Shire Pharmaceuticals announced a new drug they had been testing called Ritalin.
At the time they were a small company run by a husband and wife team.

I bought it to their brilliance well before the drug became the standard for treating ADHD.

Moderna are up near Boston, I think, and there are several thriving genetics companies there. I'd expect their work to be in association with MIT, across the river. They are part of a larger umbrella group of biotech companies - I doubt they are trying any manipulation, they're not that new.

Much of the research is done in small outfits focussing on a very small number of targets.

Good point, as you say thankful for small mercies.

For some reason the Spanish at least here in the south east of Spain are very family orientated so strange as it may seem it will be a very different sunday for us not seeing 3 or 4 carloads of younger families visiting their grandma.

Rest of the academic year at Liverpool uni is going online which means I’ll be paying for an empty room in a rented house for my son while he’s back home eating his weight in food that I’ll be buying no doubt, whilst he’s pocketing his loan.
I guess other unis will be announcing something similar
