To any of you on here who think the government has a coherent, well-thought out and lowest risk plan, and that it is sticking to this plan, please can you tell me why TODAY, weeks after we saw this coming, Matt Hancock is on national television appealing to any and every manufacturer of ventilators, to ramp up production, prioritise product and to supply as many as they possibly can "No number is too high, we will buy all of them".

Today.

Does that sound even vaguely like everything is under control??? Why has that call not been made weeks or even MONTHS ago. If no-nothings like me could spot this Tsunami coming weeks ago, what on earth has the government been playing at. Germany have 4x the numbers of ICU beds we have, and have already been trying to get thousands more.

I despair I am afraid, I really do. It is clear that the government took an enormous gamble and the penny has dropped that it has failed.

It's not an obvious procurement strategy, for sure!

Which companies (plural) is he talking to? Because a quick google search suggests we have one company that makes them.

Breas Medical, on their website for their product “Nippy Ventilators” proudly state they are the UK’s only manufacturer of medical ventilators.

Why has Germany got 4,649 cases but only 9 deaths?

Probably more of the German cases are amongst the less at risk members of their society. For example, in Germany each child is allocated a named paediatrician for them to help as they grow up. Youngsters are low risk re. the virus but have better access to health service consultants compared to the UK.

What makes you think the UK hasn't been trying to procure ventilators until now?
OK, perhaps they have to be fair.

But Hancock making an open appeal on national television, at this late hour, does not spell measured, planned and under control, does it. Suddenly we've decided we need to appeal to all and sundry because the penny has dropped that we are going have nowhere near enough capacity. This was inevitable. Those silly graphs with the flattened curve *under* the NHS capacity was a lie or incompetent, one or the other. We were never going to be able to meet demand unless we clamped down HARD from day 1 to stop the spread.

When a Tory supporter such as yourself who even started supporting the Brexit views of the party ahead of your previous strongly held beliefs can now criticise them in such strong terms, people on here should take notice.

can people stop fucking bickering, every fucking thread its the same.

anyway on to my point,i work at the airport,as the days go on more and more flights are getting cancelled,if this carries on and we all get "layed off" will we be paid , or is it just tough shit?

hopefully you’ll get paid.

unless you’re one of those soulless twats that work on security bag screening then you’ll get fuck all.

Lol, just kidding. Hope you and your colleagues get sorted.

Two things spring to mind:

1) They may be testing a lot more people than we are, we may actually have more cases than they do.

2) The virus has spread differently so far with more older people here infected to date. Either by random chance, or due to difference in interactions in the two countries.
Or as I read somewhere they are counting different ie in Germany
If you have underlying health problems your cause of death is that.

I hear you mate; I have been a daily swimmer for 20 years now and it saved my life. I was in the pits of an absolute black depression and, little by little, length by length, it was my saviour (that and a daily ant-depressant that I have used for 20 years too), so keep up the exercise, whatever it takes. On Christmas Day, the only day my gym is shut, I buy a resident's pass for the a hotel which has a pool. My gym (David LLoyd, Cheadle) was deserted this evening, had the whole of the pool to myself. It's nailed on to shut so I'm getting prepared; as I said earlier the bike will get cleaned and I'll hit the road. The great thing about running/cycling is that you need nothing but the open road (and a bike!). This thing will pass and we'll come out the other side with a much better sense of perspective; we'll know what's truly important. Family and friends. As for the career change, you'll get there bud, in good time. Stay on target, keep steady, all will be good.In meantime, get plotting some decent running routes.

Thanks mate - wise and kind words there.
I could’ve dealt with this last year but 2020 has been pretty terrible for me. Definitely struggling with my wellbeing atm.
Dreading the gym closing (and I bet my daughter will be too). Awful timing personally but it’s terrible for everyone (despite some of the bravado knocking around).
But I think you’re right - we’ll come out it with a psychology zap/reboot (one would hope).
It’s that odd feeling that everything is going to be find ‘someone/something’ has it under control but we’re starting to understand that’s not the case. We’re fragile creatures in a natural world. I thought we were in the cusp of understanding the micro organism works and how we can conquer it and rebuild us humans (look at the latest stem cell therapy/research)...but perhaps that’s premature.

Christ...I’m going to walk my dog.

thanks again

And many more ov us no nothings av been thinking the same pal
In which case you maybe need to try harder to know more and avoid his mistakes. (He wants the PM & his cabinet put in jail btw)
Jesus that says it all the elderly are being forgot
How do you know the elderly haven't booked all the slots?

Was due to take the family to London next weekend (planned on taking my lad to Chelsea away before it got rearranged/cancelled) but not sure if it's a good idea now. Can't get refunds for the train or hotel (or theatre tickets for the Sat night) so it'd leave me out of pocket but don't know if we want to be travelling around on the tube, in a busy theatre etc. Or is that an over the top reaction - should we just carry on as planned?

When ever this thing gives enough space for a more normal existence to resume, I hesitate to think what the answers will be to the first obvious question that will be put to that Blonde hair person...'Is there anything you would have done differently than what you did at the outset Prime Minister?' I am convinced that the first sound made will be 'Errrr'. Though I do fervently hope it isn't followed by a 'No'.

I laughed at them graphs too. I saw several nations doing the same ones, where the flattened curve sits perfectly on the capacity line, as if by magic. It’s a graph you do in school, purely theoretical and not based on anything that’s actually happening in reality. Look at our curve for number of cases, nothing flattening about that, it’s getting steeper.
