COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Kids saw the grandparents yesterday and, nobody said it but, it could be the last time for months. Awful feeling, but better safe than sorry.

Could cause us childcare issues in the short term, depending on how long the schools stay open. But having parents over 70 with underlying medical conditions, I prefer to act now as the virus is unquestionably already here and community spread is happening.

If we're going down this route then we need clarity on getting provisions to the isolated asap from the government. Hopefully free Netflix and prime to keep them from going insane, free shipping deliveries, prescription meds etc...

I'm working from home all week except one day and hoping that face to face meeting is cancelled. Wife and little one will be home too, but we were just saying that as long as the elderly close to us are safe then we're less bothered about getting it ourselves so maybe outings to keep the kids occupied are not impossible. Let's see. Daily WhatsApps from the kids to grandparents and for us to check in.

Luckily I can be around to get my parents stuff too, but I know many cannot. The childcare issue with over 70s is going to stuff many too, lots are reliant on grandparents nowadays. So it needs consideration, and we've chosen to act now rather than wait for Boris to decide when.

Not sure whether or not to take my kids to school. They live with my mum and me and we would both be in the high risk category. Normally would just tell them to take time off but it is important exam prep time for them.

I live with my 76 year old Mother ( who is in poor health) & 19 year old Son, like many others it's difficult to know how to manage this.
My Son's doing his A-Levels & his school is still open, my employer has denied my request to work from home & my Mother is dependent on us for pretty much everything.
I can't isolate my Mother away from us as she needs us to care for her.
I think we'll just have to take as much care as we can but ultimately we're in the hands of fate, i'm sure it's the same with the vast majority of other people.
Not a lot else we can do but hope we don't pass this virus onto my Mother

Alison Rudd banging in this morning about people with zero hours contacts who work in football. They should get paid, she said, or at least have it explained how long they will be not earning so they “know how far they have to dip into their savings accounts”. A slightly different world inhabited by the horned one, than the vast majority of people in the gig economy.
I’m now never astonished to hear that a politician is out of touch with society. They lead us but know nothing about our day-to-day lives.

Qu'ils mangent de la brioche.

In work now (I work for a logistics firm and can't work from home unfortunately) and the amount of people coughing their effing guts up, constantly, is ridiculous. And management saying nothing.

This. I noticed over the weekend. Everyone coughing.

So I did my panic buying yesterday. 4 cans of soup, 2 tins of sardines, two bottles of fruity water.

I'm not sure it was a bright idea saying all 70+ will have to stay in for four moths... How many toilet rolls will I need to get in to last me that long?

Isn't she a journalist not a politician? Though your point is still valid.
To be fair, most journalists have had to work freelance for a while at the start of their career. Of course many of them have had the bank of mum and dad to fall back on if they have a difficult time, which is why working class voices in journalism have all but disappeared.

But yeah, savings account. The thing that no-one has because interest rates have been so low for 10 years that it's barely worth it.

Out of all the nonsense that’s been said, and no doubt will be said, stating that 70+ will be staying in for 4 months is right up there. Hancock doesn’t fill me with any confidence (pst, “got any spare ventilators mate”? Ffs).

People have finally started panic-buying here in Malaysia. Absolute pain in the arse, because I live next to the supermarket so I usually just pop in for a few things every day. Now every time, I get stuck behind a bunch of nobheads and there's no 10 items or less over here. They'd completely wiped out the chicken aisle today. That doesn't even keep ffs.
