I guess it’s good news that testing kits are being made and produced, but what is the point of those tests if there is no treatment/vaccine available?

All it enables at that stage is to tell them to totally isolate?

Apologies if I am missing something obvious.

No one is naturally immune, as it's a new virus, you're correct.

It's pure chance. If your immune system woke up early and had it's weetabix (healthy eating, exercise, good hygiene, yeah I'm not the best at these things, hygiene aside) the day you came into contact, you've got a good chance of beating it before it takes a hold. I don't think it's anything to do with the strain of the virus you've contracted.

Antibody tests are on their way soon, and they will be the fucking game changer that let's us turn the tide with this ****.

how do these work though? Who do they test and why? Quite close?

So do people think we'll end up in lockdown? Inevitable surely, and if so - when?

If you haven’t done personally already, I would do so ASAP for as much of your time as is possible. Look at how Italy is now. That is more than likely how we will be in 2 weeks, if not worse, going off the different figures.

we can get through this, but we need to stay at home for 99.999999% of the time, only broken up by essential food shopping.

Letters have been arriving at the homes of people at risk. From the Telegraph:
The NHS wrote to the 1.5 million people seen at being at the highest risk of hospitalisation by the virus, urging them to stay at home for 12 weeks from Monday and refrain from visiting shops. Military personnel are helping to coordinate plans to deliver groceries and drugs to those being "shielded"
Anybody seen one?

Got to say, I'm delighted. It needs to be done.

Next few days, that's the easy thing to explain.

So, a test for the virus is actually quite difficult, for very complicated reasons that I don't really understand. So we just have to accept that it's difficult and time consuming to test for the virus itself.

When fighting off infection, your body creates antibodies within your white blood cells (more or less, in a very cut down explanation). Once you've beaten the infection, these antibodie remain in your system, and these are far easier to test for. It's also important to understand that once you've had the infection, you have immunity (this is nor accepted between scientists). This will last between a year, and a lifetime. That's a problem for another year.

The point is, we will then be able to identify those who have had the virus, who are immune, and who will not pass it on. These people will then be filtered back into 'regular society', and the process of the world starting up again begins.

I said that there were no Western countries with a mass testing strategy. One has emerged. They're certainly testing huge numbers. Whether they are tracing contacts of positives I don't know.

That country is very predictable: Germany. They are testing an amazing 160,000 per week. Do you know how many people the UK has tested? 72,818 to date.

By virtue of testing so many people they should be better able to reduce the virus transmission rate. Their fatality rate is very low but their no.of deaths will increase as the epidemic matures.
Clearly, they are finding more cases which is why their death rate is so much lower.

I had one and suffered a heart attack which killed me. Its ok on the other side. Seriously, I know I'm at greater risk than average, no need to waste resources telling me.

You might not with your head screwed on but there’s many that are putting themselves at the gravest of risks.

If there are ppl over70 with underlying health probs who do not realise they are at risk, no letter is going to change that.
Top down patronisation costs money.

Those who have had it can then give blood and plasma extracted from it can be used to treat those who are sick.

My family is probably typical of the scenario you seem to envisage.
I'm Asian.
I have a wife and 4 kids. I also have a 78 year old mother that lives with us.
I saw this thing coming.
We started stocking up with food and essentials roughly 2 months ago. We didn't tell anyone about it because we were afraid of being laughed at.
We discussed a plan of what to do if this became a reality.
3 weeks ago I stopped my mother leaving the house, the risk having been explained to her.
One advantage of mum living with us is that she doesn't need to go out to shop and she doesn't need people to visit to shop and look after her.
One week ago we kept the kids off school, told friends, acquaintances and family what we were doing and asked them to keep away for the duration. Had been invited to a wedding, so we rang them to say we wouldn't be coming.
I have totally stopped work and we are now in total isolation as far as we can be.
It's not families living together that is the problem, it's people's willingness to be vigilant and being prepared to do what is necessary to avoid unnecessary contact and ride this out.
I have to agree that what we are doing isn't typical of everyone but it's not about how many people live together it's about awareness.
Great until the neighbours cat walks across your lawn, having previously stood in phlegm flown out of a car window, you go out mow the lawn and throw cuttings in your green bin unknowingly whistling away whilst you go back inside with virus all over your self, two weeks later .......... you know the rest
