COVID-19 — Coronavirus

The story behind the COVID-19 outbreak in the Black Country is heart wrenching.
It stated with a skier coming back from holiday in Northern Italy, he then went to church the following Sunday and spread it to many members of his local church and they spread it to their friends who spread it to doctors surgeries, charity shops and schools.
Most of the spread occured before people had symptoms. Indeed I have caught it from a doctors surgery known to be effected.
30 dead so far.
The only good news is that most of the medical staff who caught it will be fit again to help manage the charnel house that will be with us soon.

To quote a doctor friend if mine, "The policy of not enforcing the wearing of surgical masks in the west is clearly a dreadful decision. As a result the virus is spreading 3 times faster in the west than in China or South Korea." The first purpose of a surgical mask is to stop the wearer spreading disease to others.
To be fair, if they’d ordered people in the uk to wear masks more than a couple of weeks ago they’d have been greeted with gales of laughter and 90% non compliance.

Quick point, if any of you know people with mental health issues try and check in with them. My sister has bipolar and has to take meds for life, she has a few issues in her life and self isolated for a week. I got a text on Friday saying she’s thinking about killing herself and has all the pills lined up. This is going to severely mess with people’s mental health.

It’s awful for mental health this. I really feel for people in your sisters position and anyone else suffering. A friend of ours was saying the same Friday. His brain is telling him that his Job is lost, his house is therefore lost and his kids will be homeless. He was actually saying him going would actually at least give them some money in life assurance. So sad to hear.

I have had a few moments in my life and there are some really good online tools to help people.

Hope your sister gets through this ok.

I don’t subscribe to the associated conspiracy theories, but if they were true then that would be the perfect way to deliver it.
Number 3 in the playbook after South China sea island incident, and Tawain incident apparantly. They can easily lock their country down and stop the spread, whereas the west can't.

And the mile long queue of people outside?

You're supposed to observe a metre's distance from the person in front of you, and the person behind you is supposed to do the same. By and large, where I live, people are observing that rule of thumb. Ironically, some of the very elderly just don't quite get it, and they're wandering up too close to people, where they themselves are the ones most at risk. If you back off, they move towards you again. They don't quite get it. But I recognise that I live in a town of about 11,000 inhabitants. If you live in London, Madrid, Paris, Berlin, it's much more difficult to follow that rule. Even where I am, I've taken to going to the smaller supermarket, if I need to go at all, and only for really necessary stuff. If it's food, I get it from the butcher's, the fishmonger's, the greengrocer's stall, etc. I believe in getting fresh produce anyway. Amusing note: here in France — in my little town anyway — the specialist wine merchant has been authorised to stay open! Good wine is good wine, after all, we don't mess around about that question, here! (Just got myself two bottles, one white, one red, both from local vineyards).

Safer journey for her bud, hope she gets home all well and good.
She left her van outside our house for the 3 weeks,as she lives in Manchester, and is coming straight from Crewe. We`ve already said to her that as much as we want to give her a big hug thats totally out of the question.
She will telephone us from outside of our house,to let us know she has arrived and my wife will leave her keys and sandwich near the top of the path for her.
Better safe than sorry and in view of the vastly increase in numbers from the States she going to self isolate for 14 days.
Thanks mexico for your kind words ref her safety.

Probably. I guess you have to face Bird flu and SARS first to get the message.

Personal choice... Daughter came with grandkids for the weekend, just gone. Now other daughter wants to get in takeaway for us to eat together later - frankly, the risk still seems low (not an area with a lot of cases, and I'm in the "vulnerable" category - age (just) with some underlying issues but fitter than most a lot younger). I've been fairly scrupulous (just short of OCD) with hygiene (get shopping from supermarket, click car open through my pocket lining, food in boot, go back in supermarket to wash hands before driving home, leave most goods in boot - for 3 days if possible, wipe plastic packaging before putting in fridge, etc.). Now if she'll use our favourite Italian restaurant where they will bring food out to the car, rather than the place she means where she might have to queue up to get it...

ordered a pizza last night to help make our food last longer. The instructions when ordering was that they was to be no contact. We left instructions for them to ring the door bell and leaving the pizza on the door step as we can see thought the window. That's how it was delivered, he knocked on the door, we waved through the window and he gave us the thumps up.
Similar to you as I`ve been advised that some e-bay stuff I have ordered will be under the same circumstances.Well done to those types of companies.

We really need to take a leaf out of Spains book robbieh.
Before it’s too late, Oakie. I’m flabbergasted that measures haven’t already been announced for full lockdown. I fear it could be catastrophic if not done ASAP.

Small world. My Mum and Dad live in New Mills, my brother in Furness Vale just off the A6. I am cooped up in a little flat in Manchester.

When I listen to the Italian doctors being interviewed and asking what advice they have, they all say stop work. The industrial Northern heartland of Italy has it worst because whilst the little northern towns were quarantined their workers were still in the factories and car plants working away as usual.

Stop work, and test. That's what I hope happens next.
I deal through work with a plastic manufacturer based in the north of Italy. Now according to my contacts there, work is still going ahead, there’s no problem with staff getting to and from work but they are taking all the necessary precautions, she said their obviously concerned and cautious but goods for my place left on Friday.

We've had a breakfast order delivered this morning... the only thing I could think of doing for mothers day....they did similar

However I just couldn't enjoy it as all I could think as I ate it was who the hell has had their hands on this food whilst preparing and delivering it
Good shout as they`ve probably been scratching their plums at the same time.
