Lots of reasons:
- The skiing youth got it first. They are not as good a figures as they were a week ago.
- Lots of testing to actual cases (reduces mortality %)
- Lots of ventilators
- Using remdesivir antivirals (they bought a big stockpile last year).
- Traditional use of Medical Ozone gas (Oxygen with 0.5 ppm Ozone) for fighting viral pneumonia.
- Tradition use of Ozone therapy to boost immune system in ill patients. (e.g you bubble Ozone through olive oil and rub the ozone into the body).

Population concentrations in the worst affected areas must have a big impact also. Spreads quicker and less able to then deal with it. Compare Germany to the Netherlands for the closet comparison.

Like you say the verification of actual cases is probably the biggest factor.

Italy has the oldest population in Europe - 23% are over 65. Germany and Switzerland do not have older populations.

In Italy for the first three weeks it was attacking the 60+ year olds, it seems to have mutated now its attacking the 30s and 40s

I have a question. Is someone with diabetes at higher risk from coronavirus? My mom has diabetes and she is 51. Although she has not caught anything, I am still worried about her.

The simple answer to that is yes, there aren't enough details to quantify that when you factor in age and general health but I would assume that she should take every precaution like I and many others are doing.
