Employers need to take actions that are well within their control and well within the capabilities and willingness to comply, of their employees.
You could lower the number of people travelling to work in the mornings and evenings if employers exercised a staggered working schedule arrangement.
Reduce the number of staff in a building at any one time. You can still keep a place functioning. Reduce the tables and chairs from canteens and encourage staff to stagger breaks.
Not everyone can work from home, but there are sensible ways to reduce risks and enact social distancing.
The only real alternative, and what is probably coming for us all, is a total lock-down, that is properly overseen by law enforcement.
In the Western world this is difficult and costly, but I wonder if in the long run would it be the most economical?

On a different note, I noticed a big shift in the language being used on Irish News reports last night. Because of the fear for mental health, it was being stressed by experts that social distancing is a misnomer. You can and should still stay in contact with people, you can talk to people but should physically distance yourself from them (2 metres).
The manner of how the virus spreads was explained using terminology that has been repeatedly heard in the media.
Aerosol - is the vapour from people coughing and the reason you should maintain a two metre distance.
Droplet - is people sneezing into their tissues etc. Minute droplets of mucous can get on the hands and are then transferred to other surfaces and can be spread that way.
Airborne - is extremely unlikely as it only survives a couple of hours.
This country is asking staff in the NHS to take extraordinary personal risks to treat Coronavirus sufferers. Similarly other key workers in schools, supermarkets, care home etc are being asked to put themselves at risk.

The public just doesn’t expect other employees in non critical sectors to take those risks. The government should issue a very strong statement reminding employers of their obligations to protect employees and the public. Make it clear that when this is over HSE and the police will investigate companies that stay open. If there is clear evidence that they haven’t used their best endeavours to protect their staff and customers they will prosecuted as severely as possible, including corporate manslaughter if there is sufficient evidence. Make it clear that if employees are forced to work unnecessarily they will be able to sue their employers for damages if they become seriously ill.

Just been told nurses/ doctors are being assaulted for their id badges even pinching oxygen what a fucking world we live in

They should pass the details to every supermarket and when one of the fuckers uses the badge as ID they should be told to go to a secure room where they get picked up and taken straight to hospital and put in the middle of all the worst case sufferers and told to crack on saving lives. When they cant they should be isolated named and shamed.

On top of that, why aren’t Tube managers/staff limiting the numbers per carriage?
They don't carry guns.

Couldn't say for certain, but likely. The mayor is the chairman of TFL, but I would think it's likely to be like Johnson and his advisers - Khan will be advised by the people who run TFL, and is the public face.

It's not a solvable problem though, with a clear answer.
More trains running (for less crowding) means more staff travelling and being exposed. Might make more people try to travel as well.
Some stations have closed, but if people need to travel, the neighbouring stations will be busier.
Missed the point. He meant the reduction in station staff in London was when Johnson was mayor.

recorded cases which we know is not correct. The actual death rate is now pretty much thought to be around 0.7 to 1% which is bad enough without people scaremongering due to lack of understanding.
By whom? Not the WHO (they still say 3.4%) and you also fail to take into account what the Lancet is saying regarding the fact that death tends to happen 2-8 weeks after the onset of symptoms and thus we’ve got a shit ton of people that are confirmed with it, that will die from it, but are currently still alive.

It's not ideal, but you still need the drivers/trained staff to do things that would be necessary.

The police have enough to do, and the army are not a solution to running a train service.

Well the biggest thing that the police/army could do right now to save lives is to stop the abomination that's occurring on the London underground.

They'd do it, not by driving trains themselves, but ensuring carriages/station aren't overcrowded.

If we can't do that while almost every other country in the world can, they or the politicians responsible for this farce should be stood down immediately.
