The problem is that you are starting from the point of "That must have been a terrible thing" and not starting from a neutral point.

Instead you should be looking at the evidence it was a disaster and there is none. And there simply would be by now.

The scientists and modellers don't give a shit about anything except tracking the growth of a pandemic, and Ferguson has been referred to throughout this by several of his peers across the globe as the very best in the world, so if they say sporting events at that point weren't a problem then they weren't a problem.

No mate, he’s coming at it with complete common sense. After everything we’ve seen, heard and learnt these past couple of weeks it is mental that you can still believe this.

If you’re right why not just continue with all sport events and wait for it to blow over?

70,000 people cramming onto public transport, standing on the concourse, drinking and eating in pubs and restaurants, using toilets etc. For 5 days!

Btw the last day of Cheltenham was 13 days ago. 12 if you think the UK is 24hrs behind with its stats. There’s plenty of time for the complete picture.

We know Charlie Adam got it from being at Cheltenham. How many people in their 30’s and 40’s went to Cheltenham, picked it up then went to work the next few days or had lunch at their parents at the weekend? How many went on a night out afterwards or ate in a restaurant?

It was ludicrous that it went ahead.

Latest News: 919 people have died in the last 24 hours in Italy.

Absolutely awful and now you have to be seriously worried about the rest of Italy where lockdown procedures aren't as severe as Northern Italy.
4 or 5 days later, the rest of Italy was locked down to the same extent as Lombardy.
The fact is it was ignored by the usual suspects for a further week till the death stats became monstrous

Lee Mack as well apparently

Hundreds of frontline NHS staff will be tested to find out if they have coronavirus by the end of the weekend, as the government moves to ramp up testing for the disease among healthcare workers.

Michael Gove announced that increased "antigen testing", developed in partnership between UK businesses, research institutes and universities, will be rolled out "immediately" to those working in hospitals and social care.

Speaking at the government's daily coronavirus briefing, cabinet minister Mr Gove said that the testing would "dramatically" scale up next week, allowing those working in health and social care to "have security in the knowledge that they can safely return to work if their test is negative".

"This is absolutely crucial to our response to - and fight against - coronavirus," he added

Antigens can be detected in blood before antibodies are made, meaning they are a much quicker way of identifying whether someone has an infection

They are different from antibody tests, which can tell you whether you have already had the virus rather than if you are carrying it at the time.

Deputy chief medical officer: We don't expect significant change in our numbers for 2 to 3 weeks; still cannot predict accurately when peak will be

NHS chief: Urgent cancer treatments to continue - but decisions are between the patient and their doctors

WHO officials at press conference: This still causes severe illness in some young people - they are not "invincible

Oh NHS austerity question

Gove - ducked it completely, talked about food deliveries and volunteers etc, fucking neck on him

Medical advisor didn't answer it either
What do you want him to say? Yes we fucked it, should have spent billions on more ventilators and PPE over the last 10 years for something we didn’t really expect?
Fuck me let it go, it’s too late and we need to deal with the here and now and not point blame for past errors.

Me to. Is high BP, controlled with medication, high risk? (I’m in that bracket.) Or just uncontrolled high BP?

As an aside, I would have thought that most people with high BP would be under treatment. There again, you can’t take anything for granted.

Don’t we have any medically qualified posters?
Hypertension generally causes its damage over time, so it will depend on how well controlled your BP is in the long term. Those taking their medication properly will naturally be at lower risk as they'll be preventing/slowing the long term damage, but will still be at higher risk than those without hypertension as they'll still have had, and still will have, periods with higher than desirable blood pressure.

I can't say with certainty how they use the data for the risk factors in covid-19 but generally when talking risk factors, we would include both groups of people who have hypertension and take medication alongside those who have it and don't take medication - so you can probably think of the risk number they provide as a mean; those not taking meds will likely be riskier than what they say, and those taking likely less risky than they say.

Understood. Thanks very much.

Pleased to see that universities and research institutes will be co-opted into testing. About time.

A pity the media didn't ask about the quick response antigen testing other countries are now using. That's potentially very significant although it sounds like the entire focus is now going to shift to nursing a wave of patients with zero resources available for anything other than caring for patients.

I don't know why the British are so secretive with their data. What does their sampling show? Yesterday they suggested social distancing was having some effect on the data, well in what way? We're going to be watching some very grim news in the coming days. It's important that we get some encouragement where there is some.....hence everyone pores over the Italian and Spanish data when it comes out.

He was asked a question, fudge it if he must but just to ignore it completely? Austerity has a lot to answer for it is a fair question to ask if we could have been better prepared without it

It's like stocking up on snowploughs for the winter. Nobody could have seen this coming 12 months ago and planning far ahead impossible

I don't think his plan is to open the US up without regard for the consequences, but to use the new antibody test and America's vast testing capacity to selectively remove the lockdown and get the counties that are largely unaffected back to work again, whilst continuing to practice the safe distancing regime. Each county will be designated as low/medium/high risk and will have measures in place appropriate to the classification. Seems like a perfectly sensible plan to me.
I wasn't suggesting it wasn't sensible. If they use testing then why not, but they do need a way of interrupting the chain of infections.

No not at all, answer those questions at the inquest when this is finally all over but no point whatsoever doing it now. Pointless
Yeah, focus on what happens now. But sometimes people need a rocket up their arse before they'll pull their finger out.

Shocking number of deaths. So many families being affected by this. Not even hit the peak yet either.
