COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Hopefully, across the country, more people had more sense than people in The Station in Altrincham on the weekdays when I was walking past, it was busy every evening. And a picture of The Orange Tree on the Friday night made the papers as they were queuing outside to get in.
I'm more of a brickies man myself and that was hammered

You could argue the point about all the European and world leaders though. China had to get to grips with it as the first country and maybe were late but once it was a known threat to the world, which it was in January, why did the world leaders all choose to ignore that? Air travel should be automatically stopped in these situations in the future until it is clear what the risks are. Had they stopped all air travel 6 weeks ago we wouldn’t be where we are now, particularly on an island like ours.

Taiwan saw it coming and acted. I'm guessing they don't care about the sensibilities of the Chinese. Unfortunately the WHO continue to tippy toe around them as do the majority of world leaders.

On 31 December 2019, Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) implemented inspection measures for inbound flights from Wuhan, China in response to reports of an unidentified outbreak.[34] The passengers of all such flights were inspected by health officials before disembarking.[34] A six-year-old passenger who transferred in Wuhan and developed a fever was closely monitored by CDC.[35] At this time, there was alleged to be 27 cases of the new pneumonia in Wuhan.[35]

By 5 January 2020, the Taiwan CDC began monitoring all individuals who had travelled to Wuhan within fourteen days and exhibited a fever or symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections. These people were screened for 26 known pathogens, including SARS and Middle East respiratory syndrome, and those testing positive were quarantined.[6]

On 20 January, the government deemed the risk posed by the outbreak sufficient to activate the Central Epidemic Command Center [zh] (CECC),[36][37][38] which mobilized government funds and military personnel to facilitate face mask production.[citation needed] Originally established as a level 3 government entity,[37] the CECC was promoted to level 1 on 28 February.[39] The CECC has coordinated government responses across areas including logistics for citizens on the Diamond Princess, disinfection of public spaces around schools, and providing daily briefings with Chen Shih-chung, the Minister of Health and Welfare.[6]

Have you got any evidence that our government knew about this at Christmas mate? If you have then fine, I'll happy concede the point but until then...
The first news report was on BBC news channel on the 28th December, so it it possible that a minion on the Foreign Office China Desk knew about it before then.

Bollocks. From start to finish.
Is it?

Calling it Chinese Virus isn’t particularly racist.

‘Chinese’ is a nationality not a race.

It started it China.

Place naming viruses happens with almost any virus you can think of.

Calling this Coronavirus makes it confusing when talking about other Coronaviruses.

Place naming SARS-CoV-2 “Wuhan SARS” is no different to “Ebola Virus”.

We trusted China.
Tawain didn't and has now had 306 cases and 5 deaths as a result. They learned the lesson of SARS. The west didn't.

You’re absolutely correct, we should have been preparing testing and PPE in January at the latest but the trouble is, China and the WHO were still denying humans could pass this to one another, in January.

The mistake the government made was A) trusting China and B) when it became apparent it could be passed from human to human, the government gambled by not spending a fortune then.

We should pin this to the top of every COVID-19 thread on the forum.

matey am going off how bad i was with a mystery virus they called it at christmas time ? and all the symptoms are just like cornavirus to a tee. the doctor took about 2 seconds of my time and give me a prescription and steroids ?? i am a asthmatic and for my doctor to give me a strong steroid without any question. also the time scale it took to clear up it was about 6 weeks and that is not normal for flu or chest infection
Even as we speak, 90% of people being tested in hospital with Covid-19 symptoms right now don’t have it. They have other ailments or flu or bronchitis or pneumonia.

You didn’t have it then.

Anyone else think this bloke’s a bit of a loose cannon? (Not you claytop)
First he claimed half a million deaths, scaring everybody witless, then 20000, most recently 5700? I appreciate this modelling will change over time when various data is applied, but still...

He never claimed half a million deaths.

That's the problem. Idiots in the media and people who don't look things up for themselves believing the media.

They wrote a model which suggested half a million would die if nothing changed and we all carried on life like normal.

The very same model suggested 20,000 deaths if we closed schools, banned gatherings, socially isolated the weak and implemented social distancing.

And deeper in the same paper the deaths with those measures could have been as low as 4,000 depending on when they were brought in and how effectively people stuck to them.

He's been incredibly consistent in what he's said, but people don't actually listen to him, they listen to the first sentence or two and ignore the rest.

I'm not saying that the virus itself wasn't around in this country at Christmas - it's entirely possible that it was and some of us caught it back then if it's now thought that the earliest case was mid-November time - but what I'm saying is that the UK government weren't aware of the existence of the virus at the time. Your symptoms certainly square with those of Covid-19 and I'm glad you're ok now

because a alert was sent out to other governments about a virus scare and China shared that sequence
(Chinese efforts to sequence the genetic material of Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. China shared that sequence in early January) so they knew long before they was saying and been working on a vaccine months before or why else would they release info on it blind
And in a more normal world with the biggest power in it under normal leadership, this would have been the point at which the Centre for Disease Control would have been straight over there to start sussing it out and working on something to sort it. However, Trump got rid of it for no reason other than it was Obama's baby. If we are scrutinising which govts buggered it up and at what point, this issue is critical. Because he knew it was a major fuck up, instead of acknowledging it and seeking to put it right he spent weeks convincing people that it was all bollocks and it would 'disappear like a miracle'.

Personally I think you're missing the point a bit here although there is merit in your response time argument from Western countries decisions were being made on a raft of misleading data from the CCP to cover their blushes -

Lets ask the question - had this virus emulated from any other country other than China, Russia and N.Korea would the WHO have been notified significantly earlier (early December) (with the correct information on H2H transmission) , I believe the answer is yes in the vast majority of cases and that the respective country would have tested and traced infections and cut off inward/outward travel into their area pretty quickly. There would not be a pandemic right now.

Unfounded my arse.

Already covered at great length a week ago in the Trump thread.

And racism doesn’t just have to be aimed at different races. CPS will do you based on nationality, race, ethnicity or religion so saying “Chinese aren’t a race” is complete bollocks.

It has a name, it’s Covid-19. The only people I’ve seen call it Chinese Virus since it was designated Covid-19 are Trump and his acolytes.

It's David actually.
Can you explain why this virus deserves special naming privileges?
It’s been named. We’ve covered this a week ago. You’re well aware. And it’s not a special naming privilege, not every new disease is named after a place. Just like SARS and Swine Flu weren’t.

You’re not thick, you know the above.

Ding, ding....Round Two?

.
Last week, the premier, Li Keqiang, called on health officials to investigate whether asymptomatic people were contagious, in order to help the country’s ongoing prevention plans, and ordered officials “not to cover up” cases.

But the infectious disease expert Zhang Wenhong, said at a symposium on Friday that asymptomatic carriers would continue to pose a major risk, even as China took measures, such as temporarily banning foreigners from entering the country.

“Now, we only allow Chinese people to come back. But when our country’s doors open again, there will be large numbers coming in. When they are asymptomatic, the risk is great.”

The people in the pub were stupid pricks then, not those telling them not to go to the pubs
Oh I agree they are stupid pricks. But, especially with the Friday closing, they should have announced the pub closures on the Thursday night and that they wouldn’t open the following day. The scenes of pubs being busy on the Friday night were wholly preventable.

I can't believe anyone in the modern world still thinks this matters. Do you go around calling people "paki's", "japs" and "chinks" because Pakistan, Japan and China are only countries so it's not racist?

Racism is prejudice against someone based on their race, ethnicity, religion or nationality and has been defined as such for about 40 years.
