Irish Current Affairs

By a government voted in by a minority of the electorate..........."one man one vote" should be the only democratic way that way a winner would have to persuade over half the electorate to vote for them to get a majority. FPTP is used in a GE but other ways are used in other votes in this country - the authorities take the piss and load the dice in whatever way they think will suite them best in a number of cases.
I did say - after many years of criticising FPTP.

The situation in Ireland does not seem greatly attractive - so I am wondering if my support for PR has been more to do with theory than practical

Mind you - FPTP - I wonder if your post would have been different if Labour had won a stonking majority?

They did under Blair - still think its an outdated electoral process though. In this day and age when people are demanding their voice be heard they also want their vote to count for something. Never a fan of the Brexit party but it is odd the number of votes they polled over the years and never got an MP elected. In recent years its people like those voters who wanted something to happen voted one way and never got what they wanted who are now the most vocal the most rebellious. I bet most voted Tory to get Brexit done as Johnson laughably promised - I bet a tidy few wouldn't agree with some of his other policies though.

Just watched Mary Lou MacDonald's speech. Very impressive indeed. What are her chances of being appointed Taoiseach?

For some on here the 'Blair years' do not count as a Labour government

My question was - and I am looking for a entire straight answer - "I wonder if your post would have been different if Labour had won a stonking majority?"

Meaning the recent GE - would you be on here bemoaning matters if Corbyn was PM?

Regardless of outcome FPTP is outdated - I was furious when the LibDems got their chance at forcing through a change and fucking bottled it, got it watered down then realised what they had got wasn't what they campaigned and went into caolition to achieve so never really got behind it.

As you have proven on the Johnson thread - you are not very good at giving straight answers - not even very good at whataboutism

Lets try again

I don't know if it's FB piss, but I just read that the current leader just said that SF have yon Coronavirus.

I love politics when it descends to farce. It may be because I have Post Traumatic Brexit Disorder, where farce is front and fucking centre, 24/7. Probably longer.

Is there a time limit on forming a Government?
Nope, generally we decided it was best to hope they'd fuck off away for as long as possible and leave the civil servants actually get on with running the country instead of babysitting the cunts.

Spotlight program on BBC NI last night was interesting, regarding the rise of Nationalism again in the UK.
A few interesting points.
1. It's not just nationalism in Ireland and Scotland that is a threat to the Union. English nationalism could do more harm than either.
2. Interviews of people in all three jurisdictions sited Brexit as being a big factor in this rise in nationalism.
3. The surprise rise of Sinn Fein in the Republic, has focused unionist minds up north in a very short space of time.

Regarding point 3. Trevor Ringland, a Unionist who played Rugby for Ireland made some very valid points that have been made in here before also.
Sinn Fein pushed the social issues in the election down south and won big as a result. Trust that their intentions up North are as socially conscious is not their amongst the Unionist community.
It will take a great concentration on what is mutually beneficial and also what is best and inclusive in for all, to unite Ireland. That is the people North and South.
Sinn Fein hold a rally then in Newry and in answer to most questions put to them is Unification. This issue alone is at the top of their agenda, when talking to nationalists up North.

Then you have David Trimble being interviewed and the realisation is there that if they want to protect the union then they can't do it alone, by wrapping themselves in the Union Jack,
to use his words. It seems they have seen that the Sinn Fein strategy of targeting the middle ground's concerns rather than their core support, pays dividends and he feels they should go after the moderates in NI and look after their concerns for business etc.

No shit Sherlock. Is the penny dropping?

Crazy stuff that, can't see it ever catching on.

A DUP councillor has said the coronavirus outbreak is God's punishment for the introduction of same-sex marriage and abortion law reform in Northern Ireland.

The DUP distanced itself from the comments, telling the BBC Stephen Nolan show Ballymena councillor John Carson was expressing a personal opinion and not that of the party.

"This is a global pandemic and our focus is on protecting lives in Northern Ireland," the party said.

Mr Carson told the BBC he stood by his comments but refused to discuss the matter on the airwaves. He has also not returned calls from the Belfast Telegraph.

Taking to Facebook to comment on abortion becoming available in Northern Ireland, he wrote: "I said when abortion was legalised that our nation would be judged by GOD because of its departure from his word and the legalisation of the murder of the unborn child as well as same sex marriage.

"I was laughed at and mocked by some but as l said at the time they laughed at NOAH until the rain started.

"You reap what you sow and our nation is now reaping the judgement of GOD because of an immoral and corrupt government.

"It is time to repent and turn again to the GOD of our Fathers."

The public post was 'liked' by scores of people, among them the DUP MLA Trevor Clarke.

He told the Belfast Telegraph he interacted with the public post from his private account, which he admitted he does use for political comment.

He said he would not be commenting on the matter saying it was a personal matter. Pressed on what his view was on the matter he added: "I am not getting into a brickbat with the media on this."

Responding to criticism under the post, Councillor Carson said he was entitled to an opinion.

He added: "They laughed and mocked my Saviour too, but some day soon their laughs will turn to screams."

SDLP MLA Matthew O'Toole responded: "Very patient of God to wait for Northern Ireland - virtually the last part of the western world to get either equal marriage and abortion rights - before sending judgment."

Same-sex marriage was legalised in Northern Ireland at the beginning of the year. It was introduced when MPs voted through an amendment to a Northern Ireland bill in parliament forcing the government to legislate in the absence of power sharing.

And abortion was decriminalised in Northern Ireland last October in a similar manner. New laws allowing terminations in all circumstances in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy came into force this week.

Before the change abortion was only allowed if a woman's life was at risk or there was a danger of permanent and serious damage to her physical or mental health.

Nearly a million people around the world have contracted coronavirus, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University, and more than 47,000 people have died as a result of the outbreak.

The real figures are believed to be much higher because of testing shortages, differences in counting the dead and large numbers of mild cases that have gone unreported.

Previously the DUP Ballymena councillor Maurice Mills said the devastation brought by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005 was God's punishment of the city's gay community. Katrina killed over 1,300 people.

He refused to apologise for the offence caused.

In 2015 he was made a Member of the British Empire in the Queen's New Year Honours list for services to local government. At that time he told the Belfast Telegraph he stood by the comments.

The DUP has been approached for further comment.

Makes sense. God does take his cues from what goes on in NI.
Good to have you back AWG.

Reported on RTE that some of the consignment of PPE just received through China, are not fit for purpose.
Three quarter length sleeves.
Overall the HSE are happy to be receiving a significantly large order such as this and have secured a secondary line of supply also.
This was the first consignmenet of an order worth over €208m.
