Bayern never wanted any player to run down its contract. They do not wait a year when they need a player now - they did not do with Lewy either - but they did not get him before. Sane preferred to go to Pep some years ago - not to a coach that is not good in developing youngsters like Ancelotti.

That it is fine to get players on a free - and that some players, especially for the second row, get more attractive when you do not have to pay transfer sums... - ok. No club says "no" to such bargains. I am not sure if Bayern would have bought Goretzka, Rode or Kirchhoff if they would have cost big transfer sums. But that were not players for the first 11.
