Across Europe, countries are easing the lockdown, hoping that it will not lead to a second wave of infections.

In France, primary schools will start with small numbers of pupils today, and clothes shops, bookshops, hair salons and florists will reopen. Restaurants, cinemas and bars will remain shut.

In Belgium, most business will open on Monday albeit with social distancing. Restaurants, bars and cafes remain closed.

In the Netherlands, primary schools will partially reopen today. Libraries, physiotherapists, driving schools and hairdressers will also open.

In Switzerland, both primary and middle schools will reopen but classes will be reduced in size. Restaurants, bookshops and museums can also open but with certain restrictions.

In some regions of Spain, gatherings of up to ten people will be allowed and outdoor spaces at restaurants can reopen with social distancing measures.

In the UK, England will ease some of the lockdown measures this week, but other parts of the UK will keep stricter guidelines.

In Denmark, shopping centres can reopen on Monday while in Poland, hotels can reopen this week - although foreign tourists would still have to quarantine for two weeks.

Other European countries like Germany, Austria and Italy have already begun easing their restrictions.

not mention the ones that are held out as shining examples who had no lockdown, Japan and South Korea.

it would extremely odd if the uk unilaterally decided to stay in lockdown for a prolonged period when every country in the world is releasing .

Our easing isn’t even that dramatic.

Certainly nothing out of left field. Everyone seems to be heading in the same direction.

When did picnicking become so important?

Every time something is mentioned, debated or advised, one of the only things addressed in detail is the restrictions on where you can and can't place a checked blanket and a flask of stewed tea.

Who the fuck is really desperate to eat their lunch in the middle of a field, so much so that it is one of the priority issues in guidance.

If want to go dogging, fucking own it and go dogging. No need to pretend you are being all Enid Blyton instead.

If you really do want to just eat your lunch, do it in your kitchen.

As I was banned from the other thread before I could explain why the government hasn't explicitly explained how R is calculated at its press briefings when responding to the claim that people shouldn't be expected to look for detailed information themselves. Here is why it's probably not a good idea to explain how R is calculated on the nightly press briefings.

"An important epidemiological understanding of 2019-nCoV is concerned with its transmissibility, quantified by the basic reproduction number R0 and the effective reproduction number R .

R0 is the expected number of secondary infectious cases generated by an infectious case in a susceptible population. R is the expected number of secondary cases generated by an infectious case once an epidemic is underway.

R= R0x,

where x∈ (0, 1) is the proportion of the population susceptible.

R is calculated as follows:
R=K2(LxD)/K(L+D)+1

where L is the average latent period, D the average latent infectious period, K the logarithmic growth rate of the case counts as reported."

I can only imagine the gasps of realisation across the nation as the chalk scratches it's way across the blackboard and reveals the equation.

edited because the forum doesn't accept mathematical notation.
This thread should be password locked. You should set a statistical test and if it’s passed you get the code to get in and read it. You won’t get many questions and you may get the prize for the shortest thread.

My only complaint is I think the UK should be doing this in in a couple of weeks. Compared with Spain the lockdown has been half arsed which is why the numbers are higher.
Having said that 3 things in the new proposals can certainly get the UK back on track. Not opening pubs, limited public transport use and not reopening schools immediately are good ideas.

Doesn't matter every country that has been sucessful has had mass testing, until we do we are endangering and sacrificing people

What is successful? The virus is still out there, no vaccine or tablets available to make sure you don't fall ill. Some countries have made the initial wave smaller but it just means they'll have many short waves. Be interesting to see how it all pans out, I predict no vaccine.

it’s a tricky one. I still don’t understand the logic if junior school kids going into school ahead of senior school kids.

senior school kids have more important learning to do and Generally can follow social distancing rules better I would expect.

My daughter is a primary school teacher... despite anyone’s best efforts trying to keep 5-7 year olds apart is like herding sheep with a deaf sheepdog

Bottom line mate, not many give a toss about what happens in the Far East, it’s the Western Europe countries that matter. And lo and behold most are realising we have to try something.

Honestly, I don't get how some people are so confused by the latest guidance.

Pretty much every question can be answered in one way...

Yes you can, if you can do it safely and maintain social distancing.

I do agree that to to be able to say this we will need to see more details on public transport and how to make workplaces safe.

Recovering this morning from the worst discussion I have had ever with my Dad last night. He was a life long Labour supporter who - in my view obvs - was turned by the Brexit narrative but has become someone who politically and socially I barely recognise. He has become so rabid racist right wing were he not my Dad I wouldn't maintain contact with him. Tonight he revealed that because " of what he has seen on his phone as he no longer watches the msm" that -
1/ The virus is being spread by Muslims as mosques are still open and the Police act upon reports of VE Day parties not Friday Mosque prayers.
2/ There are more infected illegals getting into the UK than might be coming in on authorised airline flights
3/ people need to just use common sense and steer clear of foreigners
4/ the media are inflating the number of dead and its about 3,000 tops no matter what they say
I am devastated - the man I looked up to is no longer what I thought - I really don't know what to say to him and worst of all I am not sure I want to call my 82 year old Dad again next week at the agreed time .....devastated.

Sorry, that sounds so hard. I've seen similar happen to a couple of aunties and uncles but thankfully not to quite the same extent. Unfortunately in recent years we've seen a lot of older people become more tech savvy (which is a good thing) but in the same ways they're often more vulnerable to phishing scams etc, we're also seeing members of the older generation essentially being radicalised online (usually on Facebook and via the Youtube algorithm). I constantly have to remind my parents to be sceptical of what they see/believe on those platforms and thankfully they seem to be listening to me.
