Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

I think so too, there are millions of football fans that will probably say that if it ok to resume a contact sport why are we standing 2 metres away from everyone

That's the issue isn't it ? People can only return to work on the condition that social distancing is maintained. It's impossible for footballers to return to work (I.e. in matches) and apply social distancing. What makes them so different when we're in the middle of a pandemic ? Nothing whatsoever. I reckon Jonathan Van Tam gets it, but the Culture Secretary seems to be being held over the proverbial the PL barrel. Time to bite the bullet now & call it off - anyone with a modicum of common sense can see it's unworkable. As the days go by I'm becoming increasingly pissed off with football - a game in which I've been involved since I first could walk. I never ever thought it would come to this.

I was a student at University of Manchester. I did a Masters there in Astronomy and Astrophysics. I stayed on to write my research up as 'staff visitor', bu now I have accepted a Doctoral scholarship to work on a project related to Exomars (a joint Russian and European space agency mission to Mars delayed now to 2022). It relates to the Rosalind Franklin rover which is due to launch in 2022. I'll be using neutron diffraction to study the affect of perchlorate salts on the hydrogen bonding in water molecules, investigating the boundaries of life, and the self-assembly of bio-molecules, the initial building blocks of life.

Give them gums a good rub.

Currently they are being asked to train with all the social distancing rules in place, no matches or proper training will take place until the next step is OK'd in June, and it might not be, so at the moment they are doing what the government asked and "returning to work" if they can't work from home.

I'm against football without fans, and football using resources that should currently be directed at social care and the NHS, I don't see that footballers training well away from each other is a major issue, its the endgame that is the real issue, because you can't social distance in a competive contact sport.

Which is precisely the point I was making -returning to work (i.e. in matches) makes it impossible to maintain social distance. You know that, I know that, we all know that. Returning to training is of course officially 'returning to work' but it's merely paying lip service to the ridiculous idea that PL football could return in any credible format.

Football isnt using any resources that should be directed at the NHS.

But it will do when players coaches, managers, and other staff needed to restart football start catching covid 19, plus when its starts lots of the public will ignore to social distancing so a spike in the virus that will put pressure on the NHS.

The Spuds are up that well known creek without a paddle or canoe in terms of their financial status due to the debt secured against that stadium so they're desperate to finish this season.

Bet levy won’t reimburse the spurs fans. He probably give them all a credit note.

They've bought tests the NHS have decided against using.

I'm not particularly bothered about the football either way but that's not something they are doing.
What tests are those? And the physios, drs, cleaners are all using ppe

The players will use the clubs medical staff, not the NHS. The chances of any player getting it seriously enough to need to go to hospital is very small given their demographic.

What ?? The clubs are set up to deal with covid19 with all the skill and knowledge of keeping the player alive. I would be shocked if a player needing life saving medication didnt go to the NHS.

The CDC has the hospitalization rate of 18-49 year olds at 2.5 per 100,000 around mid April.

And that doesnt account for the fact the premier league footballers have incredibly high long function, advanced screening for underlying health problems and instant world class medical care.
What about a player getting it and passing it on to an elderly or sick family member?

Your inability to grasp statistics still, despite 10 weeks of being glued to any thread about this virus 24/7 is amazing.

2.5 per 100,000.

So yeah, in a country of 70 million people the chances of 2 athletes getting seriously ill are high.

In a population of 750 people like the premier league it's incredibly, incredibly small.

Also we dont know the medical history of the "marathon runner" or "boxer".
You are funny, they were fit and healthy as it happens and just the two that came to mind, you wrote off any player getting it badly, unlikely maybe but not impossible, football shat it's pants at arteta getting it,if a player gets it and enough to go to hospital the whole thing is off
Now these tests and PPE that they are using ...

The players who are being tested at least once a day? Arent going to be contagious before a test flags them up and they're isolated.

I find it interesting and quite funny that people think the Premier League is 100% motivated by money but cant see that the fallout of a player getting seriously ill would cost them billions, as it would definitely lead to the league being delayed until a vaccine.

if its not about money why arent all the league restarting ?

Why did you edit out half his post to take out other staff ?

This is his post
