Yeah. So hands up everyone who googled and read up on Colston prior to chucking his statue in the Avon?

Only reason any fucker on here knows about Colston was because they did throw his statue in the Avon.

Shite people come out with. Fucking priceless.

Never been there and had never heard of him until googling him when he ended up under water.

I walked past that statue last year and looked him up, but tbf I devour knowledge. It’s one of many reasons why I’m so engaging and widely loved.

Okay apart from GDM, who else knew about Colston prior to chucking his statue in the Avon?

Getting a ‘Life of Brian’ vibe here...

Is it true that most African slaves were sold by other African's who had taken them forcibly? If so which Country's were they (in the modern world) and do they get criticism and constantly reminded what there ancestors did hundreds of years ago?

And weren't most African slaves sold to Arabia, where they were castrated, but Arabia gets a free pass why?

Genuine question's, not being a twat.

Floyds past absolutely does not matter if it is used to cheapen what happened to him. Pretty much every time someone dies we paint them in rose coloured glasses. I get that people can be frustrated with a perceived imbalance and the martyring of people who aren't saints but it can quickly create a false narrative in some minds. For example Ahmaud Arberys lynching in the street us being excused by some because he had a look around a construction site.

And if you listen to what a lot of the black community are saying it is based on Floyd being an everyman figure. It could have been them, their brother, their son. This is a common thread in all these cases.

My guess would be that the majority of people who fixate over his past would also say it was justified if he had just been caught committing a heanus crime (people who for certain cases like street justice rather than courts)

He could have had the worst past in history and he still wouldn't have deserved to be executed on the street in the situation he was in.

Yeah forget defeating fascism in Europe, let’s pull it down because he said some shit that was common place at the time.

What a waste of time defeating Hitler.
Haha although that's literally what i said that's not what i meant :) Context is important even though i smashed nuance into imperceptibly small pieces. I thought i was still on the internet

If my colleague murders someone and I strongly feel it was wrong and I see the coffin going past and take my hat off, am I a hypocrite?
Come on now,the mourners know everything about the racist police and the treatment they have had for a very long time,if the police showing respect were all officers that have never beaten a black or ethnic person for the fun of it then fair enough, how do we know?

A whole division or whatever they call them went outside of their station and clapped the two officers that pushed over an old man and cracked his head and said he just tripped and fell, nothing to do with us ,i think they were the division that all resigned but I might have the wrong ones

It will kill most of them to give a criminal this respect,i put this foward the other day so I don't want to go through it again

If I had walked past it then I would have done a quick search. I like a bit of history.

Even if it was a statue of you although the Google entry would have read "massive dullard who thinks he's always right."

I’m just not for tarring them all with the same brush, even in the same department.

I am thinking about the muppets I’ve worked with in the past and those who I fundamentally disagree with, in my team at work, I don’t want to be made responsible if they do something horrific.

It’s why I hate the fact people are attacking our police.

Hands up Bob I didn't. I was aware of Bristols past but only knew the Colston name through buildings there and hadn't made the connection. In that sense I've been educated, although a link to the wiki page would have done just as well as pushing the fucker in the harbour.

I kind of understand why exalting people beyond reason irritates and perhaps i reacted so quickly because im conflicted as well. I dont think anyone is saying he deserved what happened to him

History writing is all about timing. No writer would ever dare have a chapter in a book mentioning the unforseen benefits of Hitler (the companies and their products that we now all enjoy) but give it a few hundred years and someone will include one.

Can you imagine historians writing about the Mongol empire 50 years after it collapsed praising how well Genghis khan was able to practice military tactics killing anywhere between 30 and 80million by hand? Now we have books saying he is a fucking war god.

Mine would say “engaging and much loved chilled-out entertainer”.

I mean, I totally agree with you but I think it only further amplifies my point if anything.
