The stupid thing about victors writing history is that they're a lot like gamblers who only tell you about their great wins.

I think we spent longer learning about the Battle of Britain in my GCSE history than the thing actually lasted, but the battle of Singapore, the biggest loss in British military history didn't even get a mention.

We could probably do with teaching our children more about our losses and the times we were on the wrong side of history as well as the glorious victories.

I agree mate that we need to learn about losses as well mate. Sometimes there’s more learning. Weren’t we effectively starved to defeat in Singapore and thought the enemy had a lot more troops (they had less) because the Japanese got about swiftly on bicycles.

Lincoln owned slaves

Lincoln never owned slaves. Lincoln can be criticised for his ethos that if the Union could be preserved intact but without abolishing slavery he would have done so. Lincoln's vice president and successor Andrew Johnson did own slaves though.

Plenty of US presidents were slave owners. In fact of the first 10 presidents only John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams didn't own slaves. Two later presidents also owned at least one slave. 8 of the 12 slave owning presidents owned slaves while in office. The biggest slave owners were Washington, Jefferson and Jackson. Jefferson fathered several children by at least one of his slaves.

The slave owning presidents were Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Jackson, van Buren, Harrison, Tyler, Polk, Taylor, Johnson and Grant. Van Buren had one slave who escaped to Massachusetts but he didn't attempt to force his return. Grant inherited one slave from his father in law but gave him his freedom pre-civil war within two years.

Also, according to Bruce, the German soldiers mostly got around on pushbikes. And horses.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s funny or not when you’re cancelling comedy for offence.

If it’s shite and no one is watching it that’s fine to bin it but binning it because you’re worried about offending people is ridiculous.

Comedy is supposed to be controversial.
I agree,a lot of comedy take the piss out of everybody I am disappointed in this knee jerk reaction

Morgan Freeman has a good point on Black History month.

Why consign their history to a month, black people in the US and UK’s history is our history, teach it alongside the rest.

We’ve really got to move on with this “them and us” mentality, it’s poison and divisive.

I am not saying you’re doing it at all mate, I’m talking generally about people on both sides of the argument.
I agree. Stop segregating it, integrate it into all history.

Also, as usual, our fixation with the USA is fucking proper annoying!, we just copy the USA’s Black History Month (and maybe throw in a bit of Mendella).

Black history goes back a damn sight further than the 20th Century in the USA and the 17th-19th Century slavery. It’s a lot more positive than what the USA’s BHM portrays black history to be. Forget America, it’s the armpit of the world, let’s look at a far more positive and non-US based history of black people for all of us in Great Britain.

45,000 years ago, the first Europeans were black. If more was made about how we were black and our skin changed in an evolutionary response to the sunlight and Vitamin D at this latitude, the more society would think of itself as ‘one’. The first evidence of the use of Mathematics’ was in Africa. The first art and musical instruments have been found to come from Africa. There have been hugely successful empires like the Nubians and Kushites who were Pharaohs and rulers in Egypt in some dynasties. The ethnic map of Africa is so old and wide ranging that there are more genetic markers in Africa than the entire rest of the world. And many many more positive, world influencing and interesting aspects of history.

Why are things like this never included in BHM?

It’s always about negativity of things that have happened to black people, oppression, negativity surrounding white people’s actions and is obsessed with things that have happened in the USA. But 99% of black history has nowt to do with oppression or white people and has mostly all happened outside the USA.

I'm quite happy to have the piss taken out of me because I can give it back without any offence being taken. The world is a sadder place without humour of all types

Pretty much. We outnumbered them almost 3 to 1 but the whole island was designed to be protected from the sea because no one would be stupid enough to launch an attack through the mangroves and swamps that connect it to the mainland.

Or at least that was the prevailing wisdom of the british high command.

One of the main reasons for the surrender of Singapore was that Britain expected invasion from the sea, hence why huge gun batteries and bunkers pointed out to sea. So instead of trying a very bloody and costly seaborne invasion, the sneaky Japs went in through the very lightly defended rear of Singapore. It was dense thickly vegetated jungle, and thought to be impenetrable by a modern mechanized army.
So as you quite rightly state, the Japs used cycles etc,and light armoured vehicles and completely surprised the British Army.

If you missed it yesterday, here's two highly impressive singers at the Floyd funeral.

Kathy Taylor; particularly with her performance it gets emotional and you can understand the strength of faith.

Nakitta Foxx; great visual performance.

Sorry, just felt like breaking up the monotony of the same arguments...

where Jennifer hudson, she normally does every funeral
