Morgan Freeman has a good point on Black History month.
Why consign their history to a month, black people in the US and UK’s history is our history, teach it alongside the rest.
We’ve really got to move on with this “them and us” mentality, it’s poison and divisive.
I am not saying you’re doing it at all mate, I’m talking generally about people on both sides of the argument.
I agree. Stop segregating it, integrate it into all history.
Also, as usual, our fixation with the USA is fucking proper annoying!, we just copy the USA’s Black History Month (and maybe throw in a bit of Mendella).
Black history goes back a damn sight further than the 20th Century in the USA and the 17th-19th Century slavery. It’s a lot more positive than what the USA’s BHM portrays black history to be. Forget America, it’s the armpit of the world, let’s look at a far more positive and non-US based history of black people for all of us in Great Britain.
45,000 years ago, the first Europeans were black. If more was made about how we were black and our skin changed in an evolutionary response to the sunlight and Vitamin D at this latitude, the more society would think of itself as ‘one’. The first evidence of the use of Mathematics’ was in Africa. The first art and musical instruments have been found to come from Africa. There have been hugely successful empires like the Nubians and Kushites who were Pharaohs and rulers in Egypt in some dynasties. The ethnic map of Africa is so old and wide ranging that there are more genetic markers in Africa than the entire rest of the world. And many many more positive, world influencing and interesting aspects of history.
Why are things like this never included in BHM?
It’s always about negativity of things that have happened to black people, oppression, negativity surrounding white people’s actions and is obsessed with things that have happened in the USA. But 99% of black history has nowt to do with oppression or white people and has mostly all happened outside the USA.
