You’re not seriously trying to suggest this is anything but a complete u-turn by the government? Even Farage is calling it a “betrayal”.
We have simply reverted to the no deal policy that was in place previously.
Farage has simply lost the plot on this point. Probably too distracted by LBC issues.
Subsequently, to Gove's announcement, even the EU beuracracy have admitted that there will be no extension beyond the end of this year.

Come on, it’s a complete volte-face on what they said in February.

No it isn't.
Any change in policy is totally down to EU intransigence that is causing us to revert to our previous no-deal planning.
Perhaps you haven't been reading about Barmiers ranting over the last two weeks?

Sorry, I’m a bit confused. You originally said this “has been government policy for yonks”. Now you’re talking about a “change in policy”. Which is it?

Stop bending what I said.
I stated this was the previouss overnment policy for No-Deal. In February they expected (stupidly) the EU to be willing to negotiate. They EU aren't willing, so we've reverted to a No-Deal assumption.
It's easy to understand
Unless you're a Remainer seemingly

I’m not bending anything. I provided direct quotes of what you said.

Think what you want. You will do anyway.
The reality is we have simply reverted to previous No-Deal planning.

Not sure you can call it planning. Perhaps we should call it a No-Planning Deal where we simply refuse to plan for any eventuality and then act surprised.

Bit like we did with the pandemic. “What? It’s not like the flu? Fuck! What’s that? Italy? What happened in Italy? They had it before us? Shit, fuck! China?” Stunned pause, “Where’s that?”

Would that be the no deal planning that hasn’t involved any investment in new infrastructure, processes and contingencies yet. The one that just requires a dose of optimism and hoping in vain that the EU will reciprocate our intended lax customs regime.

We are not doing any inspections. We don’t have the infrastructure or personnel in place. That is the point. EU goods will enter the UK with minimum fuss. UK goods entering the EU will be subject to checks and have to be compliant with EU regulations and have the necessary paperwork that non EU countries have to provide. Trouble is we are not set up for that either which means we need France, Netherlands to adopt a similar light touch, except that will be against EU rules. So we need those rules to be relaxed ‘temporarily’ which means the EU will want something in return. You see how this is shaping up right?

The simple facts are that the EU has spent 4 years working to the end date - there are customs facilities built and staff recruited and they will do what has to be done. At this end a bunch of charlatans for reasons ranging from lies to obfuscation have done nothing to prepare properly and have had to concede a great victory in having a border down the Irish Sea and now a great victory in not taking back control of our customs borders. There is an old saying - a failure to prepare is to prepare to fail.

They were going to try to sell us the lie that the damage done to our economy was the will of the British people then Covid-19 stepped in. Now they face a double whammy and still press on. The German car makers aren't coming to the rescue - car sales are down 99.7% - why would they push for access to a diminished market? We are going to be hit by Covid more than any other developed economy - thats before Brexit damage that was already admitted to - why would Italian Prosecco producers expect an obliterated economy to buy their product?

Breaking news - unemployed people don't buy new cars or fizzy plonk.

Even if they go for the Singapore off Europe approach the damage and the potential damage to come won't offset any gains from becoming a tax haven except for the rich..................oh wait..................just worked out who was behind this and who will benefit ..............you were warned folks - enjoy Universal Credit and I hope all your bedrooms are in use and that the nearest foodbank to you is only a short walk away.

The section of Barnier's comments I posted earlier explains it well

They simply cannot suffer the UK to be a genuinely independent nation free of the EU's controls just off their shores.

Their preference is to lock us into their controls - Remainers were gifting them that - if not go full on competition and seek to do damage in the hope we will return

That is why I do not believe that we will get a deal - so we should fuck off any extension and move on

Really quite simple when you get your head from up the EU's arse

Second bite at this one.....

"go full on competition and seek to do damage in the hope we will return"... Barnier was making the point how well the UK has done in cornering the market in some services as an EU member in the EU's level playing field, competing with other EU members (and, unless there is infinite demand, by damaging their share of the market). But in your Cakeland you want to be independent and compete with the EU on unequal terms, but without damaging the EU? If I win a contract and you don't, are you undamaged? What if I win all the contracts? Do you really think there is some "all shall have prizes world" in international business?

I sometimes wonder if you really do believe all your tosh.

A good read on where we are with the negotiations. Coming back to the Political Declaration seems to be key as it established a common ground on which both sides can meet. The E27 have toughened their stance and moved beyond it as have the UK in the other direction. Barnier wants both sides to meet back on common ground.

Time is the other factor. With the Withdrawal Agreement everything was in place apart from the NI border issue, so a last minute push to overcome the one remaining obstacle was possible; but you can’t do that for a deal in its entirety which is why UK are pushing hard for a ‘tunnel’ to get some basics hammered out. It is self evident that time is a bigger issue for the UK than the E27 given it’s the UK pushing for accelerated talks. Barnier has rejected the tunnel but offered more rounds of talks which the UK has accepted.

The Germans take over from 1st July and their stance is the budget and pandemic response are the priorities. Opposing a transition extension will be increasingly seen as an aggressive and hostile act which will reduce sympathy and harden the E27 position. That said the E27 are happy to use the limited time as a pressure point and it is clear the UK is worried about getting boxed into a corner with little agreed and time running out.

EU Intransigence? ....... It seems to me that the UK is accelerating and intensifying its complete lack of progress on a trade agreement because we are now reneging on the commitments, promises and legal obligations made when we signed the WA and PD

The PD is a wish list.
Additional sovereignty to the EU is not on the list!

But at least we will be able to vote the government out every five years, make our own laws and control immigration................
