Garden Birds and wild birds thread.

many years ago , family meal by the patio window, there was a thump against the glass, did not see what it was so carried on eating. Bit later the youngest stood up to take the plates to the kitchen, she wailed and pointed down to where a worm was crawling out of a black-birds beak......

I'm expecting Zebras and Wildebeest in the next instalment. Just squirrels in my back garden.

Well may I ask what you expected to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically…”

I haven't posted any vids for a bit but the update is,fruit bread is their favourite, zabba continues to be a little shit grabbing everyone else's food but he knows if he climbs up to the window he gets the first bits, there is no flies on him

Next door is delighted to see a baby badger come out from under the shed on his side,it backs into mine,he has footage he is going to show me tomorrow, the set is huge with three ways in and out,i am lucky I have a neighbour who loves wild life as well

We have Northern Cardinals nesting in the lilac bush next to the front porch. The male sits in the tree in front of the house and warns the female (who is sitting on the nest) whenever I let the cat out. The cat wouldn't have a clue they were there if the male wasn't carrying on. Can't take a decent pic but they look like this: Male and Female.

Really colourful birds mate. Are the common over there?

Yep, but we've never had one nest on our property before. That's probably because I have let the lilac bush grow taller than normal. Funny thing is that I noticed them when I was starting to prune it back so I stopped. Going to have to keep the cat away once they hatch and start making noise.
They have a nice song as well.

They're not hard enough to live in Idaho

You don't have them there? Your summer probably isn't long enough for them to have time to build a nest,

Do you get Blue Jays?
No, I've seen cardinals in the SE of the country but never here, they really are beautiful birds

I forget people are going to listen it ha,it is tricky getting them because I can't open the window because they run away, they have trust to come right up the top but only if stay completely out of sight, that is why it special to see and hear then
Was going to ask you about that.A true sign of wild instincts, wanting nothing tp do with humans ...apart from food handouts...intresting.
The vids are excellent, but of course only show the animal in scavenging mode..
As your prob aware ,these true Ominivores are well capable of feasting on any other meal which comes its way inc clearing a Pheasants cutch of eggs/young if it came across the ground nest, which,on its nightly travels in search of food is likely..i imagine any small animal/rodent which crosses Brocks path would be killed and ate , but eggs in particular are a delicacy.
This animal has the tools to kill instantly..and woe betide any hunting/curious dog which follow the animal down into its set chamber....Badgers are known to be capable of ripping a dog's stomach open with its powerful claws...A fantastic, powerful animal..with a weakness for Fruit Bread !

Ha,the last bit made me laugh, the foxes I have had here have always been super cautious and run away if I even go to the window with the window shut, that is their nature,i am glad they do that because of how they are hunted,i was a hunt sabateur back in the day,i hate cruelty to animals in every form

The badgers have no affection for me,i am a food source no more no less, I feel some trust that they bring their babies so close to me with the window open and me talking albeit if I opened the door they would be off,for such a big animal they don't half move

I have seen them eating rats if they go near their food

One benefit of it pissing down all day is I just watched a mother sparrow teaching a youngster how to take a bath in a puddle on the patio.

Cardinals are great and they are abundant here. Very pretty birds and so vivid too. Had a pic on my old phone of around 6 pairs at once in our back garden. Was taken in winter and against the snow they really stood out.

As for the Blue Jays...pretty birds, but have an annoying and loud call and seem to bully all the others on the feeders.

Bit of fox drama tonite, the cubs reckoned they could get amongst the badgers for the food, one ended up pinned over where i feed the birds and the other coming around the wall and right into the mums and baby badgers, mum fox started calling them and they called back which scared the baby badgers and they hoofed it under the shed to the set which allowed the fox cubs to run through the others down the garden, they are brave i will give them that ,easy to distract the badgers with fruit bread luckily

Get regular foxes at the ex-mrs family home.
Had one coming right up to the patio door scoping our kitchen for a while.

She was startled one dark morning by one throwing itself against the kitchen door and then proceeding to whimper as it took its last breaths.

Another had a mangy hind quarter and the toes from that foot missing but lasted 3 or 4 years - think us and the neighbours were keeping him/her well fed.
Got some footage of my girls throwing it scraps of ham from about 3 metres away when they were little.

Not seen him/her for a while - probably died - but it was funny watching the bambi-like floppiness of two new and very timid fluffy young foxes appear around the same time.
