Changes to the forum: can someone explain them?

I noticed the change in look, but, being a technological pygmy I dont know what changes to functionality it includes. Could someone explain what they are and how to use them?

It's not that I dont like them, it's that apart from the look I dont know what they are.

You can now type in the page number on a thread to get to a certain page. That’s a good feature

Just looks the same to me, but a bit spaced out. Seems to be a lot more scrolling.
