Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

That shark at Napoli has probably lumped another £20m on top for Koulibaly after last night.

I don't want him, but that defensive showing has put clubs across Europe on high alert there is a killing to be had out of us this window.

The inclusion of Garcia made me almost as angry as the result, he has made his intention clear and yet we overlook Stones for this ungrateful kid?

I'm bitterly disappointed and last night the air was blue (!) as I fumed about the result. I know we were poor and the performance was well below par. The intensity was gone from our game and we never played at the tempo associated with City, but much of the criticism is way out of order, especially of Pep. I have no right at all to question Pep's team selection or his formation or his tactics and no-one else can argue with him either. Demands that he be sacked are little more than applications for a place in the mad house. What happened last night was that we lost a football match because we didn't play very well BUT also because Raheem missed and absolute sitter at the end of a season in which he has been truly phenomenal and at the end of a match in which he was one of our best performers and in which Eddie made one of a handful small number of mistakes he has made all season BUT MOST OF ALL BECAUSE we were, YET AGAIN, shafted by the travesty which masquerades as VAR. But this team and this manager and this board and everyone at the club are strong enough to keep a cool head - unlike the armchair strategists who feel they know best - sleep on it, and try to do better next season with a little help from the gods ( and no malevolence from the establishment) this time.

I hope people like you have the bollocks to stick to your opinion that Pep is a danger the club and root of all failure when we are successful again next season and don't just try an melt into the background.

You do not have to worry about that pal

I will be more than happy to show my face

We shall see because my opinion means shit in the scheme of things but I still have it

Perversely I will also be happy if I am wrong but you know that as we all want what is best for City, us fans that is

Fuming when I saw he was in the team. Shouldn't have even travelled.

Pep being successful is the minimum we should expect when he will no doubt have another £200m+ invested into his squad again next season on top of what’s already one of the most expensively assembled in Europe.

With the unparalleled investment the club has given him, success is the expectation, as it would be for any other manager in the vacancy.

Yes, he’s achieved an awful lot, but he’s also had some of the very best tools to do so and has also fallen short 4 seasons in a row on the biggest stage, despite this.

I felt gutted for Bernardo Silva last night, in his home country where he was born less than 3 miles from the stadium and Pep didn't even give him an opportunity.
And Phil. If he wasn’t a Blue and a soft twat, he’d be off to a club that appreciates him.

Very sorry but any team with Fernandinio, Rodri & Garcia as our back middle 3 is asking for punishment, even an average team in France took the piss with 3 easy goals, more pace in my grandparents than those 3

We have conceded those all fucking season, Ederson just doesnt look like saving anything in those situations either its all amateur stuff

Why oh why was Garcia anywhere near that squad? Why the fuck did we even try playing like that just to trial it for the Bayern game???

Its a big let down & Pep & the team deserve all the shit thrown at them & us fans

Very sorry but I still don't feel confident with Rodri as HM

Unless Laporte & Koulabily link up & we sign an out & out LB who can defend better than the tripe we currently have then forget about winning the League back its not going to happen

We now have players like Bernardo, Stones who imo would have been a better choice last night wanting out.

Bernardo must be gutted

Another noticeable problem last night out & out striker where do we go with this, im sick of hearing Jesus put the hard yards in & defends well when he's paid to fucking score goals on a regular basis nothing more sure we need to sort it out

Aguero won't be back firing till October time at least, it takes him all pre season & a few Prem games to get going so where do we go??

We are fucked till CB, LB, CF are bought imo

We are carrying dead weight in our squad, all of our players are technically great but the below are being carried due to lack of effort or just simply are too passive.

Cancelo
Stones
Otamendi
Mendy
Zinchenko
Rodri
Gundogan
Jesus - he is great 50% of the time and clumsy the other 50.
Mahrez - great at what he does but lazy defensively, won't head the ball and is too predictable so limits us when he plays.

Dinho - has been amazing but shouldn't have got another year.
Bravo - waste of wages

Pep can set things up and/or adjust on the fly but at the end of the day players have to execute. Guardiola will bear the brunt of criticism and that's life as a coach yet you don't have to dig very deep to see where the weaknesses are
No you don't but Pep selected Gundogan, Rodri, Fernandinho is 35. And I think that you can play 1 or 2 max with the right team mates. They are good players but you can't play 3 of this type together and not pay dearly for it. We have seen this again and again throughout this season.

Woke up today struggling to understand how we could lose yesterday. We have a crazy squad and manager, yet continue to fail against teams we should run over.

I’m not especially excited about our new signings because this wasn’t due to a player making a mistake, this was 100% on Pep. He has to change something or the club will start looking for a new manager. Given the funds he have, he should do better and he knows this.

The one game knockout format favours the underdog. Over two legs you have time to claw back a two goal deficit and the better team over the two legs should go through. Being underdogs against Bayern would have suited us - given the right formation.

I don't even believe buying Usain Bolt will rectify the type of goals we have conceded this season.

Kompany's pace had already gone and it was his sheer force of character and will to win that saw him and us through that 14-game title winning run-in.

The season beforehand, Stones and Otamendi were playing just as high and we dominated, yet came unstuck against the teams who can punish any shortcoming in Europe.

I firmly believe that good players can still be the wrong players.

Our constant inability to get close to making tackles in midfield and get back in, is leaving our defenders ever more exposed, due to Fernandinho being moved and ran into the ground.

Rodri and Gundo are a fundamental issue, they are never going to improve pace and teams are now just waiting for their chance to fly past them when the ball breaks down.

The elephant in the room is do we just tread water like this again until Pep decides if he is going to sign an extension at some point?

We can't move forward with real momentum again until the board know where they stand.

Or we sign someone like Messi!!
Messi, behave, he is the last player we need.

Pep signs up for at least another 3 or adios and now.

We can't go into the new season with a manager on one year and the dressing room having doubts, which I think they do.

None of that's really relevant to what I was saying though. The poster I was replying to stated that Kompany left us in the shit all of a sudden, without warning and that he badly managed his exit after 10 years with us. He didn't do anything wrong.
I know, I was just adding to the thread.

It was

He cover mistakes like city is a bottom club, he bought almost all those players

You play againt Lyon not prime barca or Milan. We end up conceding shit goals, put at the least an attacking team who can scare Lyon. Confidence play a big role in modern game, Lyon whould have stayed in their area and played cautiously

Even when we trash teams i have always a feeling, a mistake is coming during the game

We were holding a line close to the halfway line for the first 2 goals, I don't call that dropping off.

García isn’t even that good. A kid who doesn’t see his future with us, is too small and is criminally slow for a centre half.. gifted the opportunity to play in our biggest game of the season. I would rather have seen Ottamendi play than García

I think this is the first time where I really felt Peps selections let us down. Could maybe add the Spurs away CL last season but we had important league games around the tie so could understand it more.

Whats annoying is we have in us to completely destroy any team left in the tournament if we play to our strengths. The Utd away game first halfin the League cup game comes to mind. Unfortunately though we are have been prone to performances like last night throughout the season. I could see us beating anyone on our day but I couldnt see us putting 3 decent performances together to be able to win the tournament.

We needed legs in that midfield, Bernardo had to play centrally with KDb and Rodri, put Gundo behind them

We cant go into the new season not knowing what Pep is going to do, the players will just go through the motions until the new manager comes in.
I think we're at that crossroads of 'either he signs an extension or he leaves immediately' and someone else starts the rebuild.
