Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

All Pep talks about in the build up to these big games is about playing with personality, being ourselves. Then he totally changes who we are by trying to adapt to the opponent.

Talk about mixed messages. Just let the players go out and play.
Do you think that if Pep had been our manager in 2012 and 2-1 down with little time left, that he would have rallied that team to win the league?

I'd like to think Pep will get a talking to about this defeat by our top brass, but seeing as though they're all best buddies I very much doubt it, just business as usual.

We didn't play well.
We played how we've played so many times - with one dimension, based on possession and hopefully breakdown a defence. Very very rarely do we ever change to sit deep and play counter attack, we have no tall guy to hold up a ball... we have no 'bullies' on the pitch to rile the opposition...

We play lovely football, but that's not enough. We need versatility and resilience.

We don't have massive failings - we are a bloody good team, but we aren't world beaters. If we are ever going to win in Europe, it's going to take more than just nice football.

Absolutely , his team selection and tactics were very disappointing , he totally got it wrong against Lyon and a real shame that he saved this for our biggest game of the season ,he has no excuses he deserves all the criticism that is coming his way. Its our fans i feel sorry for , every season we are built up as favourites and every season we fall short Pep had a great opportunity to bury the myth of our Champs league inferiority complex and he failed dismally
Agreed. Still got the hump about it. Shocking managerial performance. Wholly wrong

KDB also v Chelsea at 1-1 in that 3-1 defeat. Same as Sterlings miss,
That was a bad one, actually it was 1-0 for us at the time, not 1-1. I still maintain that miss helped Chelsea to the title as they went on a huge winning run after it and we sort of lumbered on afterwards. A season changing moment.

“Flat track bullies” you say. We’ve just beaten LiVARpool 4-0 and Real Madrid 4-2 and lost to Southampton and Lyon. That my friend is the exact opposite of a flat track bully

Coming to think of it, we didn't play our natural game vs Real Madrid 2nd leg either, 2 errors leading to goal because of Jesus press. In first leg, we were quite lucky with the calls made, we went for UEFA's throat back then. Point is Pep has always tinkered too much in this competition once we face a half decent team.

I’m shocked . The game is corrupt , I can’t believe there are people who still don’t believe that .

I agree partially, but I think UEFA likes to have dramatic scorelines which makes a good story. A 2-1 Lyon win doesn't ring same way as 3-1. Having said that, I think if Raz put that in we would have had favourable decisions our way, we could have gone in for the kill after Kev's equalizer, could have been 3 or 4-1 for us. A ManCity Bayern SF would get them more money.
I don't know, maybe I'm overthinking.

The last round v Real

Thanks this has already been mentioned not long after I posted.

However we conceded first in 8 out of the 9 league defeats. The point I’m trying to make is that this season we have failed to turn games around. There has been the odd game but not often.

Unfortunately its part of the way Pep plays and its always going to be that way...its a sacrifice and a weakness of the system.

He needs defenders who are all great in one vs one, quick, good tacklers - but also requires them to bevery good on the ball as well -these are extremely hard to find.

He needs to find some answers because it hasn’t worked this season. We are miles from the side of 2017/18 when teams hardly had a sniff. We lost way too many games this season and in almost all of them there were errors leading to goals. Teams with pacy forwards are causing us problems.

I’m not sure what happend to Laporte. He was an absolute rock when he came in and were more or less perfect for well over a year. Two rare mistakes from him against Spurs in CL last year and he was far from perfect yesterday. Does he have bad nerves?

Looking at the replay of the game yesterday, his positioning was poor. For the first goal, I can’t believe he’s not following the Lyon attacker when a long ball is coming. He even sees the guy going for it in front of him and he doesn’t bother to run along.

I think Laporte is an amazing defender but right now I really don’t recognize his quality.
I wish he would step up in these big games.

I’ve not seen much evidence of Bernardos energy and desire this season. We know it’s in his locker but it’s been missing for months.
Next year is a clean slate for him though and hopefully he’ll get back to his best.
The García thing really didn’t bother me one way or another.
Bernardo's form dropped off a cliff when the media mauled him. Orchestrated campaign designed to destroy him psychologically.

Scousers have been giving Bernado Dogs abuse on Twitter.

Vile classless bastards.I despise them like no other fans, including rags.

If you read this Bernado Chin up ignore the 6 fingered inbred fuckers.

treat them like a 5 year old with ADHD. Ignore them.

at the very least let us go out trying to do what we do
While we would all rather go down playing the flowing, fast high pressing game that has brought us trophy success, Pep's unusual selections normally confound everyone with comprehensive wins. But for some weird individual errors, straightforward chance misses an inexplicable miss and being screwed by VAR, we still win that game. Win and it's a tactical masterclass. Nothing Pep can do about those things.

No win and we’d have got out of jail. That team was a terrible selection even if we had managed to beat an inferior side.
