That's interesting. My dad who lived through the war was very pro EU which I didn't pay a lot of attention to at the time but in hindsight I think his generation had lived through terrible times and really saw the benefits.

He has passed now and I'm glad he's not around to see what this country has become.

The post war generation have largely lived through peace and prosperity but somehow resent the very structures that have given them a better life.

The longest period of peace in European History.

The longest period of peace in European History.

We have Hiroshima and Nagasaki to thank for that, along with the fact Germany had its plans stopped twice during the 20th Century.

An agreement on French cheese and us all agreeing to a certain specification on tail lights for cars, whilst handy isn't the reason why we no longer want a 3rd World War.......the guaranteed mutual destruction that would follow is.

Korea, Vietnam, Ukraine.

It might be argued that nuclear destruction was a major incentive to setting up the European Iron and Steel Community and all the subsequent developments leading to the EU. But they were explicitly to reduce the risk of any war by cooperation rather than competition for resources. Peace through prosperity, that makes any conflict not worth the cost.

I have given up trying to point out how workers protections have come in with the EU rights we acquired through membership and they just flatly deny it.
UK statutory paid holidays are 28 days, the EU is 20 days.

UK maternity leave, 52 weeks, Eu 14 weeks.
Women's rights, equal pay act, abortion act, Divorce reform act, all passed before we entered the EU.
So this government could slash holiday pay by 8 days, and still not contravene EU law, work out the maternity leave directive for another example, far more extreme.
It's your dad that talks sense mate.

Peace through prosperity im all for, long may it continue.

Dont feel that a United States of Europe is a price worth paying though or needed with ever closer political union to a point, nation states no longer exist.

Trade = yes please.

Political union = no thanks, we dont need it.

I'd never call you a scumbag but it is puerile to perpetuate this nonsense. You're not scumbags or stupid for voting for Brexit (or not) but it is stupid to expect someone to give up on their conviction that Brexit is stupid, and that they should not try and persuade people they made a mistake.

You don't admire the bravery. You wish we'd shut up.
I have no problem at all if you hold your convictions or give them up, and if, at this stage, you're still trying to get people to change their minds, well, shutting the stable door is a tad late now, but if it helps, crack on.

The UK’s 28 days leave includes bank holidays. The EU’s doesn’t so actually they’re both the same.
It was actually changed from 20 days to 28 in the UK to meet the European requirement because some unscrupulous employers were originally counting in bank holidays within the 20.

Should we continue with the EU's 14 week maternity leave, would that be a vote winner for those who would love to stay in the EU?
Thanks for the quote that proves my point.
As for Maternity leave and pay, if you look into the detail it’s not a direct comparison.

I see the CEO of Nissan has informed 7,000 staff in Sunderland that their plant will not be viable in the circumstance of a no deal exit.

well Sunderland and surrounding areas were solid Leave areas - they knew what they were voting for - we know that because they keep telling us so fuck 'em - they are getting what they wanted.

That may be but no one can be happy about 7000 job losses And god alone knows how many more when that ripples through. Hopefully they will remember when next they put a pencil to a ballot paper. Please god they have a decent choice to make next time.

Aren't those policies a bit socialist?

All to do with tariffs according to him. But let’s face it, what does he know.
Even if we get some sort of deal I suspect it won’t be long before the EU and Japan update their deal to make it cheaper to directly import cars from Japan because the delay in reducing tariffs was mainly to protect our car industry. The EU won’t be bothered about that in future. So either way, I suspect Sunderland would be doomed but with no deal it will be sooner rather than later.
