He is a fine player, and I think a lot of rational people can see that. But one piss poor (team) performance v Lyon and he is suddenly shit. Such are the mard arsed mood swings on blue doom

IMO he is a good player in the wrong team. He is clever, good on the ball and good in the air. But Fernandinho at his peak has been absolutely crucial to our success over the years. I’d argue that right now we miss him at his best over any other player of the last decade.

Pre Pep he played alongside Yaya and allowed Yaya to be as lazy and as petulant as he wanted off the ball whilst he did the graft of 2 players. By that I mean covering the ground of 2 players, winning the ball back for us with interceptions & tackles that his speed and agility allowed him to make whilst Yaya was invariably nowhere near the play.

Ferna also often started our attacks by wriggling away from challenges and playing a nicely weighted forward pass. Rodri has the latter but that’s pretty much it. He can’t get away from challenges to make a better angle for a pass. Yes, Rodri is playing in front of a back 4 that has probably been the worst we’ve had for a long time but that’s simply not the problem. We want to play with 2 free 8’s like we did with Silva & KDB but we can’t because Rodri doesn’t have the pace to play at the base of midfield on his own. KDB has often played deeper this year or in other games Gundo has come in to play near Rodri. Takes so much away from the attack and even then we don’t win the ball back like we used to.

We need to replace Fernandinho. Rodri would be a good back up option for the squad for certain games.

Rodri can wriggle past people he has an excellent skill on the ball and decent pace for about a second lots of time this season he has dribbled past an attempted tackle. and I have thought how has he done that given the guy was on top of him and very capable.

He lacks pace over longer distances but I think he might look quicker next year when he is use to the team is better and has pace around him and we hopefully do not have an interrupted season. He certainly has the legs and professionalism to reach a decent speed

You make some valid points, but to be fair I think Fern is a one off and almost impossible to replace like for like, I am not sure who out there you think is as good as Fern in his prime? I also think Rodri will do better second season (Fern wasn’t as key to us in his first season as he became season 2 onwards, imo), and I know for sure that Fern has been underrated outside City, and for me is he in the group if Dave, Sergio, Vinny, Yaya, Zab for contribution to our success

To counter that though if you have Foden and KDB in front of Rodri who will, when we lose the ball, press to win it back then I think Rodri can be a great player for us.

Equally if we have faster CBs behind him then we should be well balanced.

What we should never play and I don’t know why Pep does it is have both Rodri and gundogan in midfield. Then we are easily overrun!

rodri reminds me of Gareth Barry a little - always in the right place through excellent reading of the game. Both have a decent shot from outside the area on them (but rarely use it ). Barry was under appreciated as well. The only issue for me with Rodri is his lack of mobility and ability to cover space quickly but for his first season he did really well. His reading of the game mostly make up for his lack of mobility but he can get caught out from time to time with it. his distribution is excellent and he doesnt just play simple passes. Hopefully Pep puts legs around him next season in the big games and doesnt pair him with Gundogan.

If like Rodri your a great reader of the game you don't need pace, your footballing brain does the work. I personally think he is a great player, who had to learn a new league in team far from it's best.
He definitely need some legs and energy next to him, and simply can't play with Gundogan.
A trio of KDB, Bernardo and Foden/Aouar with him would be perfect to me.

I think pace helps occasionally but Rodri like you say uses his brain to overcome his..Think he could become a real rock for us if, like you say, he has legs around him...

Someone else mentioned replacing Ferna and him being a one off in terms of attributes.....maybe this is why we are keeping an eye on Luiz at Villa and had that two year buy back clause - perfect timing for when Ferna leaves and would be greta long term planning and foresight by Txixi

I rate Rodri very highly as a player, but am not convinced he is the man for our job.

I have absolutely no complaints about him getting more opportunities to become that.

What I can't get my head round, is the fact we have 3 players who can't run, as main options for the job & haven't bothered even considering the idea, of finding one single player who can, as an option.

Utterly rudiculous.

Fern a complete one off, great footballer and a freak of an athlete.

If we have room in the squad and the cash I would like to see Luiz come back in, Pep clearly see's a player in him, still young, but with a years experience in the Prem.

Rodri is a fine player it will only be a matter of time before barca and real are sniffing round I dont get why people think a dm needs to run around like a headless chicken 2 of the best I've seen busquets and Alonso played with there head not with there engine

Alonso in his prime was a magnificent player, complete Rolls Royce.
