“Defund the Police” is like birtherism...not condoned by the leadership yet spouted by a few mindless extremists.
Oh no, wait, birtherism is actively stoked, promoted and spread BY Republican leadership. My bad.
We have had a long, hot summer, which always spikes crime. Throw in some civil disobedience, month long lockdowns, historic levels of unemployment affecting the poorest communities, and peaceful protests being tear-gassed and subject to baton charges by “police” wearing military garb, and it’s like a California forest fire...it goes up, its hard to contain, people and property get hurt.
Defund the Police is more about taking some of those dollars and using them on community issues, like de-escalation through social services. The Police in this country have a “XXXX now, ask questions and cover it up later” mentality, as we have all learned. The trajectory has to change, and one way of changing it is to stop selling military hardware surplus at “Everything’s got to go!” sale prices to police departments all over the country.
Not every issue needs a militarized response, but it seems like even smaller communities roll the SWAT truck and even put them in parades these days. And, it’s getting difficult to tell the difference between the military and the local police force in many areas. Getting “tooled up” gets the adrenaline flowing, like “we are going into battle, let’s roll!” and from there, the Police are ready to crack skulls and the protestors get ratcheted up because they’re being pushed around, gassed, and hit by jackbooted “public servants.”
That said, there are some days I feel like looters should be used for sniper practice, because that pisses me off to the hilt!
Property damage, arson and theft have nothing to do with peaceful demonstrations of police brutality and probably encourage it!
Conflicted!
