BBC licence fee

which they did in 1969. They wanted to change the format back then - as they do now - however by public demand the changes did not take place. Nobody campaigned to have the BBC privatised then though.

You see the reason behind this is to explore different ways to do the proms concert - ideal time to do so as the Eton mosh pit won't be present this year. But those with an axe to grind - privatise the BBC - jump on it, twist the story around and the usual suspects join in - its not about the songs its not about the exploration of the proms and how they are presented.

99% of those affronted by this will only know the two pieces of music in question and would't sit through the entire last night broadcast never mind listen to any of the other nights.

You're right, I don't watch it but if they stop playing it for fear of upsetting snowflakes (which, according to the media, is the reason that it's up for consideration) then that will rightly rile plenty of people up.

Likewise, I don't fly the Union flag or St. George's Cross but if the BBC decided that couldn't be broadcast because it upset people, I'd question the sanity of requiring people to pay for a licence fee.

No progress/ change will ever be made then. I wonder why nobody got upset when the songs were dropped previously - why nobody then thought not singing Hope and Glory was an instant reason to privatise the BBC?

I can't remember when it was last dropped nor the way the news was received but I'm guessing it wasn't dropped to show solidarity with a bunch of activists with extreme political views.

Because it was dropped after the events of 9/11 out of respect. Don't know when/how this happened but context has lost all meaning these days!

It was dropped because we didn't want to cause upset and offence to the USA and its citizens post 9/11 - seems that in some cases its ok to consider possible offence and make changes but not in others.

Outcome defined by context, people felt it acceptable days after 9/11 that it probably was a bit insensitive for such a party atmosphere that the climax of the Proms brings compared to censoring the finale in an attempt to pander to such a small minority of constantly offended people. Its not that baffling to why you'd get a different reaction.

Nah - they didn't want an air of triumphalism and celebration in the wake of such an atrocity. If you look at the reasons the current considerations are being made its the same - an air of triumphalism in difficult times its just that offence would be caused to what some see as the "wrong" people.

I still say they will be shit with no audience anyway. And 0.01% of those up in arms won't watch or listen to any of the 73 promenade concerts and won't know any of the music - but hey they want to be offended but aren't snowflakes.......bollox

If it is in light of the covid situation that for me is a more acceptable argument, though one i still disagree with, in such times its an event i feel the British public would get a rallying boost from. I must admit i haven't read any article on the situation and made the assumption off the debates i'd seen on twitter, i know, shame on me! Where it wasn't once mentioned or remotely alluded to that it had anything to do with covid and those supporting the decision where all making the argument regards the songs origins and their connections to our slave past etc.

maybe they could play crowd noises like at the football coverage to keep you happy? They could have an option behind the red button where you can just hear the noise from the Royal Albert Hall - the actual concert like on every other Promenade concert? If the songs are dropped I guarantee a couple of things

1/ the gammon backlash will be massive
2/ the audience viewing figures will be the same as ever

Because in truth its not about the proms, its not about "patriotic" songs, its about people who are triggered to hate the BBC

If they're having the concert why drop the songs? One thing this pandemic has taught us is the amount of deaths caused by illnesses such as flu, should every kind of celebration be cancelled forever more?

Because there is no audience participation - it will be an empty RAH. It will be a national embarrassment - I suppose they could have Emeli Sande sing it on the roof........its a non-story that has whipped up woke right wingers who have no interest in any of the prom concerts but hate the BBC. I say do it - a few of us who watch and care can watch in open mouthed horror as the whole sad, sorry and silent scene unfolds.

Given that (rightly) ridiculous generalisations are frowned upon on here - I am surprised that you have not been picked up on this

Gammon...triggered pmsl.

My prediction, we’ll end up with a British Fox News equivalent and the lefties on here will be crying and asking why it happened.

They do seem to want to blame the other news channels and those of us who don’t want it cancelled, for even talking about it, when we wouldn’t be if their brethren weren’t being twats.

Then when the public turn on the BBC and it goes, they’ll cry about it when they caused it.

Ha ha ha ha BBC statement - I think they are trolling certain posters on BM by replacing certain music with a rendition of YNWA lol

I don't think there'll be anything on par with Fox News but I saw on Twitter that there's talk of Farage being the headline name of a new news channel called GB News that will be competing with the BBC.

ITV shut the ITV News channel some years ago because it couldn't compete with SKY and the BBC and make money - it was a massive drain.

GB News as a TV channel will ruin Banks - Vlad will no doubt be chipping in loads though.
