What exactly is Bartomeu achieving by ridding of Messi? Elections are near, he could resign, it's not like he can get re elected anyway. Can see why Koeman is the safe choice to come in and be the mouthpiece to tell some of the established players at club like Suarez that their time is up.

Plus they cannot scapegoat him if things go wrong as he's a club legend as you said. Is this the same reason Xavi rejected the role as well? Because of this board?

The way the club statutes work is that if he resigned today he'd be on the hook for the balance of the fiscal revenue/losses so he gains little apart from avoiding his head ending up on a spike to do so now. Plus, Leo's decision was communicated long ago and Bartomeu either decided to call his bluff or him & his cronies figured they could profit from the situation anyway. Either way with the very profitable Espai Barca, he will want to consolidate power with a continuity candidate or at least ensure he gets a piece. Will be interesting to see how it plays out for him now but not unlike the situation in the US with Trump sometimes you get what you deserve rather than what you need - socis should've demanded his resignation 3 years ago but apathy or futility set in. In the end, club members are as guilty as Barto & Rosell for the mess much like the average Yank with Trump

Corporatists sometimes see things only in terms of a financial shell game and for someone like Bartomeu, he has no sporting outlook much less leadership - underscoring this, Setien hasn't even been properly dealt with before hiring Koeman. I would much prefer Leo force his way out for free and leave Barto on the hook with a disaster but I do not think he will take the nuclear route despite Barto & Grupo Godo most certainly to tarnish his image like they did with Pep & Cruyff. So absolutely I see Messi getting scapegoated in all of this - they will seek to Figo him

And yes, this is precisely why Xavi refused to take over in January because he wanted assurances that Bartomeu could/would not concede - he refused to be a pawn like Setien accepted to do. Xavi is part of Victor Font's project but will no doubt become the 1st team coach in the near future when a new board enters into the picture. No club legends will align with Barto like Abidal foolishly did - now his legacy is in tatters as well due to his collusion

Sorry chaps, I know ur not gnna like this. But I would seriously be happy if he went to PSG than us. The pressure is way too much for the club. At PSG he would piss all over that league, play in capital with Neymar and Mbappe. And would have a better chance of winning trophies. And better shot at champs league. Wouldn't have to play shit loads of games.

Over here he would be number1 target from the anti-city bandwagon. Opposing teams will try and kick him where possible, if we dont win the league media will start attacking this team "we beat u with Messi in your team" etc etc.

Great player, love him. But really we need to learn to walk before running. Baby steps.
Why are you arsed about what the media and other fans think? They’ll hate us with or without Messi!

BBC Breakfast making no comment about the rumour. St Harry and American sports politics. more important.
Something called Sports Register has a headline 'Attacker about to join City'. For one awful moment l thought it was another McGuire storey.

Wife is like..’so, what’s so good about Messi?‘.
I then showed her the top 50 Messi goals on YouTube.

...it was one of those ‘holy shit, we might be signing this guy’ moments!

A United fan - who doesn’t know where OT is - said to me yesterday. You lot are gonna have to pay Messi obscene wages to play for you.... I said you lot paid Sanchez obscene wages to play for someone else. End of conversation.

Sanchez's wages will be referred to as "only £500K per week" by all rags and rag media within the week!

many times. just thought with the goat in our team. They will come more harder than ever. But as one of the previous posters put it, what the oppositions do is the least of our worries. So point taken. Lets get this guy on board.

Why you looking at it that we only be playing Messi in our squad if he came and the rest of our team are Cart horses?

Sorry your thinking and post is like from someone who doesn’t support City! Messi if he signs there is zero negatives from it.

I know he is the greatest player and all that and even though the source is reliable... I highly doubt this figure

Not kidding. 120m Instagram followers is more than United and Liverpool combined. Once the click hunters need the clicks it can start to change. Some journos already saying it would be great for Prem. Imagine the MEN trying to get on board to milk it. This is precisely why he is a game changer for City. He changes the narrative. This is why the old press hacks are shitting themselves.
I think Blue Moon and Esteemed Kompany are in for a hell of a lift off if this happens.
The sniping will continue for sure but don't be surprised to see a change in editorial agenda. They need the clicks.
Hopefully, what s dream losing Merlin but gaining Messi!

its a forum where everyone has an opinion. what's so hard to comprehend?
We're on the verge of signing one of the greatest players the world has ever seen and all you're skriking about is that he must play in Paris as he has a better chance of winning trophies.
I know you're on the wind up, any true city fan wouldn't post one syllable of the guff you put on before, thats a given.
Fans of other clubs are green with envy and you fall into that category.

The press will be happy with him being here - 'Messi snubs charitable foundations set up by Liverpool, Rags & Arsenal by refusing to donate his toe nail clippings'. They get the clicks from his name and can stick to their agenda.

It could be worse, he could be black...
You need to clarify this last sentence

Because it does seem way out of context with the rest of your post.

Imagine next season. Champions league 1/4 finals. Rennes away. Pep's brain cogs in overdrive, steam coming from his ears, sweat dripping onto the paper on which he's trying to devise a plan on how to match them. Ping, lightbulb comes on "I have Lionel Messi, ill not change a god damn thing". 4-0 win, this allows him to piss about at the home leg, breeze through 4-2 aggregate.

This has a depressingly 'past tense' feel about it. Barca will offload because he isn't the player he was. I've just read a report in The Athletic and it suggests, sensibly, that a player's move is not always about money. Messi will have enough, even after the Spanish tax people have taken their share - the three 'f's - football, finance and family. He could spend a happy year with his and our mate, Sergio, get well paid for it, but what level of Football do we get. I would think it would not be the kind that Leo rolled out four or five years ago. I think it might be another Robinho moment, and if he can contribute like Robinho did (bar the away games) the football should be alright.
