The lawyers got fired because advising Messi is and was a massive conflict of interest. There's a reason why conflict checks exist.
I am not sure that is correct. Barca recommended that all its players use the law firm. Both therefore were clients. Many very large law firms have Chinese wall systems in place to advise clients who might be on both sides of a transaction. Also as they created the contract for both clients they can probably advise either party on the terms of that contract while using said Chinese walls.

"You have to ask yourself why Liverpool and Utd are not interested and the answer is, he simply doesn't fit in with the ethos of the clubs"
Had no idea that the kids were now using “ethos” as a synonym for ‘dire financial situation’.

Though, I guess it does make sense given it comes from the Greek for ‘nature’, in which normally only the fittest survive.

Well there was a release clause at E700m we were told. Now the speculation is that that does not exist in the final year of his contract.

I would guess that if he had to buy out his contract it would be on the contractual terms governed by his final year i.e. 10 months salary, and if so any fee should be around that value. I am very uncertain. I am hoping Barca quickly come to terms with where they are and start negotiating with City. That would be ideal.

Yes.

They could have Garcia & some beans.

Nope. EVERY player in Spain has a release clause. If Messi no longer has one then he is FREE to leave due to his unilateral termination clause. If his release clause is not active then Barca are donezo.

If he doesn't have a release clause, but remains under contract then leaves, a court would set the value of the transfer.
It wouldn't be a freebie.

There are certainly reasons to question is it really a great idea to bring in a 33 year old on excessive wages into a league he's never played in etc.

But this is football, its about entertainment, and I for one am happy to leave all those logistics and worries to those in charge and just enjoy even the possibility of the greatest ever playing for our team - and (I'll only believe it when I see it) if he does end up in our shirt then phwoar, what a fun season ahead we have to look forward to.

So, Messi played no part whatsoever in becoming the person he is today? It was all Barcelona? Why don’t they just make another Messi then?
Of course, you could flip that question and ask would Barcelona be the club it is today without Messi? I know what I think.
