The regional figures are more scary than Messi's indecision.

London 296 - up from 216 to new record.

Midlands 207 - up from 102 to new record.

Yorks 175 - actually down from 248. Bit of a surprise here.

But North West (oh dear)- 411 - up from 368 - though 16 lower than 5 days ago.

is the testing numbers way higher than normal in recent weeks though ?

No - they were down yesterday on the lower new case figures earlier in the week despite the big rise in numbers yesterday - as I reported on here.

We have to wait until next week to find out how many tests there were in England today as the government now only tell us every 7 days, as I keep complaining about in here. Today shows why it matters.

Unlike the rest of the UK who publish test numbers daily (as we did until a week or so ago).

And in Scotland the tests were down today but the case number rose and was high.

The % number I give after cases tells you the % of cases from tests carried out. That is climbing. If the number of tests were going up with more cases it should be staying steady.

They are likely targeting tests in heavily impacted areas. But we don't know the details of that either.

GM scoreboard today is 262 out of the 411 NW cases. Which is an increase in cases in GM over the rest. Only 10 short of the highest ever at 272 six days ago.

It was 164 last Friday. So a whopping increase today with some worryingly big numbers.

GM scoreboard

Bolton 66 (just 2 lower than its record from 6 days ago and a big rise day on day). 508 in month (new record). 290 past week (new record). 108 over 2 days (was 68) also a new record. Pop score - record rise to 891. Will likely be 900 club tomorrow and the first time any town has gone from 700 club to 900 club in a week. Bolton is in trouble and the idea that the government were letting it out of restrictions two days ago is frightening as for a week it has been having one of the most visible and serious outbreaks in GM throughout the pandemic. How do you NOT spot that?

Bury 17 - up from 12. Worse number here since restrictions. 250 in month. 70 past week. 29 over 2 days (was 17). Pop score 857.

Manchester 49 - up from 42 and second worse total here since restrictions. 1028 in month (new record). 258 past week. 91 over 2 days (was 73). Pop score smashed through the 800 club barrier with rise to 807. Manchester was below Stockport on this measure in May!

Oldham 9 - down from 30. Remarkable number here bucking all trends. Cannot recall when - if ever - Oldham was below Stockport. 739 in month. 138 past week. 39 over 2 days (was 53). Pop score 1268.

Rochdale 20 -up from 16. 398 in month. 104 past week, 36 over 2 days (was 34). Pop score 1048.

Salford 43 - up from 15 to its highest ever score during restrictions. 382 in month. 132 past week (new record). 59 over 2 days (was 29). Pop score big jump to 713 - was ahead of Stockport pre restrictions now well behind.

Stockport 10 - up from 4. So beaten by Oldham! But given the big GM numbers today I think they will take this. 213 in month. 41 past week. 14 past 2 days (was 14). Pop score 686 - creeping towards 700 club but no rivals closing in on catching them for top spot.

Tameside 24 - up from 15 to highest score here in past month. 330 in month. 114 past week. 39 over 2 days (was 25). Pop score huge 10 point rise to 885 closing in on 900 club this weekend.

Trafford 7 - down from 8 and 4th straight single figure number. Best in GM today. It may yet get that easing of restrictions at this rate. 258 in month. 64 past week but has a shot of wresting this title from Stockport in coming days. 15 over 2 days (was 17). Could take this title too. Pop score 724 - but borough size means it lost ground on pop score despite good numbers.

Wigan 17 - up from 8. Worst score from here in weeks. 165 in month. Still best in GM. 59 past week. Some catching up to do here now. 25 over 2 days (was 12) - surrendering this title too back to Stockport. Pop score up 5 (most in ages) to 719.

Other watch towns:

Blackburn 12 - down from 30. Pop score 1271. Went back above Oldham into number 1 spot in north as Oldham had such a good day.

Bradford 42 - down from 69. Pop score 1199 - just avoided 1200 club until tomorrow.

Leicester 24 - up from 19 - staying stable around these numbers. Pop score 1636.

I still have no confidence that the results published are all from the same day, especially with Oldham being 9, this seems to underline my thoughts. Suspect Oldham will be awful tomorrow when the testing station results catch up.

One of the reasons I give past 2 days so you can judge the last 3 days in sequence.
