We would make the 100m spent on him 10 times over with him playing for us, much more than even winning the Champions league .

If that was true we would have paid the 700m and still walked away with a 300m profit.

Revenue would increase of course if we signed him but not by nearly enough.

Anyway, it is a moot point. He will sign a miraculous extension by Easter.

If we've got a spare few 100m to throw about I'd rather we spent it in Haaland.

This clause is the issue. Does he have this clause or is he mistaken?

Did the President give Messi his word, that at the end of the extended season he could leave for free?

If the clause is so obvious, Messi would win the court case easily and maybe Barca would relent before it even got to court.
Messi is not certain to win, this is why he has chickened out.

The risk is too big and Barça + La Liga knew the threat would be strong enough.

Yeah, the president prolly lied to him but then what ? Words are cheap.

Until he was 38.

It would be utterly insane to tie up 100s of millions of pounds over the next 5 years on this man. Absolute madness. Incomprehensibly crazy.

If we'd got him at 27/28 then it would have been immense but to sign him, with or without a fee, at 34 (which he would be next season) at a time when we would need to replace Sergio, fernandinho, probably a full back or two (next year), and possibly another CB, at a time when covid has drastically reduced incomes for all teams would be so damaging as to be almost reckless.

Please God no.
Which bit of the funding for Messi was from a totally different pot than that for normal transfers did you struggle with?

I think the idea was 3 years with us, 2 with NYC. Still the best player in the world whichever way you slice it and I trust the management to know what they’re doing re money/other signings. All about opinions though, be boring if we all felt the same.

I agree with you, the agreement with the president should have been made on paper legally and then this problem would not exist.

Nonsense - if Messi was to generate 1 billion revenue then how come Barcelona are in such a state financially ?

By spending ridiculous amounts of money on crap players.

And the board and President spending crazy amounts of money on PR firms to destroy the reputations of Barca legends on social media.

And also with possible legal proceeding against the president for corruption.

And keeping the mentioned Lionel Messi against his will in the final year of his contract and still have to pay him multi millions of euros, crazy situation.

We may disagree on the Messi thing but on this post we are in full agreement.

Onwards to next season now mate

They don't have Txiki, and City don't spend money on stupid projects such as degrading your own staff online. Barca don't have a network of clubs across the globe. If City bought Messi, I'm pretty sure we could used his image to elevate our sponsorship projects.

From a footballing point of view, Messi wouldn't carry City. He'd have a limited function. A transfer makes sense for both clubs. Barca need to rebuild whilst City are still growing as a club.

You can word it differently.

Messi says he doesn't want to take them to court but it is the opposite. It would have been Barça (with the help of La Liga and all possible political ramifications) that would have taken Messi to court.

Messi was threatened to go to jail with his latest judicial problems. I can understand why he doesn't want to go through that. Messi isn't running a charity (in fact he does have a charity foundation but it is to make more money) either, he wouldn't risk losing money if he was to lose in a trial.

You are right, he could have waited the end of the window to come back to training but he doesn't have much of a choice if Bartomeu is not budging from his position.

You wanted Messi to fly over to Manchester and put on the City shirt ? It would have put him and your club into trouble.

The only fault of Messi is not having used the clause in the due time.
Bull shit - where does jail come into the equation please inform us

I'd say it's because the move would transfer Messi's 'marketability value' over to us - great for the receiving team for whom it's new revenue opportunity - but absolute dire disaster for the team that relinquishes him as it means they lose the percieved 'value' - which after such a long career has no doubt already been monetised, cashed in on and incorporated into 'the norm' state of their current (in this case already precarious) finances - meaning future sponsorship negotiations begin from a f*ckoff massive disadvantage for the club - and possibly those negotiations are invoked immediately due to extant clauses that are wholly dependent on Messi's presence.

I would like to thank Victor Hugo for inspiring my free-flowing sentencial ability.
