If they have a rotten season, Messi may still go & that could start going pear shaped quite quickly if a few things went against them.
I think the pressure that he will be put under by the Barcelona PR machine, to 'not walk out on the club' may well break him.

If Messi wants to leave, he can sign a contract for another team in January (ahead of a Summer move) and there's nothing they can do about it. Assuming there would be clubs interested, it's really up to Messi whether he stays or goes.
If next wants to leave next season nothing and nothing can stop him. He is a free agent. This season would have been better though
