Donald Trump

Susan Collins previously said that she would not confirm a Supreme Court justice in October.

She said she’d also oppose seating a justice in lame duck if there’s a change in president based on the election outcome.

But that was before RBG’s passing and she has said a lot of things and then went back on them when the winds shifted or the GOP threatened, so I am not going to hold my breath.

It will be interesting to see what Murkowksi says, as she is also previously on the record indicating she would not confirm before inauguration.
Collins is down over a dozen points in polling for her seat so hopefully she votes her conscience as she 100% knows she won’t have to deal with the GOP after January.

She is a Senator from the state I live in and I have been watching her and her race against Sara Gideon (D) closely. I’ve watched enough of their bloody campaign tv/online ads to practically be an expert on their strategies. She really can’t be trusted to do anything based on conscience; she is always looking at where her next payout is coming from. That means not burning her bridges with the GOP, which will be her main source of money and power even after leaving office (most everyone here outside of that group hate her, and it’s not much better in DC). Even if she thinks her current poor polling numbers will translate in to defeat in the election she’ll still be looking to avoid biting the hands that feed her.

We’ll no doubt soon find out, though.

I once again will be the solitary voice in noting that if Trump is successful at bringing a hardliner in, the world will be amazed at how far left Roberts, and probably Gorsuch, will lean. The Court does not want to appear to be beholden to any other branch of government.

The problem will be what cases get granted certiorari, cuz you only need four justices to do that, and Alito, Thomas, Kavanaugh and the next Trump appointee will be able to open lots of cans of worms, Roe v Wade included.

2020 can fuck right off.

Amen.

If Trump gets this seat and wins the election, 2020 will go down in history as the clearly visible beginning of the end of America’s place in the world.

RBG is the biggest small lady America has ever seen. An actual giant in a land of giants.

I had been busy all day and not seen the news today, when my wife called me (she was away with our adult daughter). We spoke for a few mins, I turned on the TV and I’m not ashamed to say I shed a tear.

She is one of the most consequential women in the history of the United States, and is famous for the words “I dissent.”

Fuck 2020!

I agree. In fact, we have already seen it from Roberts.

This could well swing the election for Trump. The likes of the nutters who want to do away with abortion and the machine gun owning truck driving fucktards will be out in force for him now as they sniff their chance to shape the country for decades. I can see this pushing those who were undecided back to voting for him. Im pretty sure this maniac is going to re-elected now.

I’d say the opposite. The gun toting flag wavers were always voting for him.

The undecided middle ground will see how the GOP are huge fucking anti-democracy hypocrites in nominating a SCJ a few weeks from an election and remember 2016. I can already see the attack ads and I can see this turning off and/or winding up millions.

Roe v Wade may decide the election. The strength of feeling this brings about in otherwise normal functioning people in America is beyond my comprehension. A woman's right to chose is such a basic common sense and fair fundamental to my rational mind, but not over there. It has polarised that country for decades and I really fear the chance to do away with it will be too strong for too many over there.

It’s fucking mental that the rest of the first world sees a woman right to choose what happens with her body and the Yanks see it a political football. And their leader who is “pro life” has paid for a dozen women to have abortions. Mental.

Anyone could almost believe he’s a lying ****.

You are not alone, mate. I was actually alluding to this with my earlier statements about why the Trump camp and McConnell will want to confirm a lackey as quickly as possible to counter what they see as Roberts’ “activism”, at the very least, before any more consequential, future-defining cases are raised, either in emergency deliberation (during/after election) or later in ‘normal’ course, if Trump holds office.

Agreed, though, whether the actual will of the electorate matters at all to the outcome of the election will be the deciding factor.

I hate to bring that up so often but I do genuinely think many are still underestimating the level of disruption, interference, manipulation, and/or plain resistance to legitimate outcome that will be seen this cycle.

I think the counter to that is what I believe is the early indication that blue turnout will be very strong. Thats really all we can do — show up in numbers too large to be manipulated. The lines for early voting in Virginia are massive (yes I used that word).
