Return of Supporters

It’s just not going to happen this season in my opinion.

even if it did, it’s just not the same. There will be lots of season ticket holders out of work, scared to go (we have an older fan base)and lots will have realised that going to matches isn’t actually that important.

I’d already become fed up of the match day experience and have given up getting another season ticket, along with my brother and dad. The match day experience for me isn’t that enjoyable, going to the pub beforehand is the best bit.

the club will be relying on the core fan base to fill the ground when we do go back, but with price rises every year and all the other factors. I think a lot of fans will give it up.

I’ve saved so much money aswell not going!

Loads of people (not just you..) with this “I have saved so much money”. That’s like the 100 year old celebrating his birthday and when he was asked what he attributed being 100 to he said “i have had the same woman all my life and I don’t drink, or smoke, or eat bad food”. To which the next question is “how are you celebrating?” You may save money but if you miss the football so what? What’s the money for if not spending on enjoyment? And for what it’s worth if a genuine vaccine is found crowds will go up not down. It will be like after WW2 - there was a huge boom on all entertainment

but that’s the point, I’ve realised over the years (this one in particular) that I don’t miss the football - going to games. Not attending has made me realise how much money I spend on football. I can now spend that on my new house or maybe put it towards savings, going to the pub - whatever....

Lots of long standing fans think the same. I mentioned my dad, he went home and away for about 30 years and he can’t be bothered with it now. Covid / being unable to attend has increased that kinda thinking. I was beginning to hate the match day experience’ before covid happened aswell, so for me personally it’s been building for a few years

id be amazed if they found a Vaccine any time soon. Also it looks like millions of people could be out of work, so I can’t see crowds going up until that situation is eased. I hope your right and there is a vaccine and people can go again safely by the way

It's a personal choice. If you have something more enjoyable to spend your money on that's great. In anyone's lives there are periods of time when their priorities change because of marriage, jobs, kids, illness etc. For me going to matches for 50 plus years has given me some of the greatest moments of my life and I'm not ready to give it up yet. The social side has always been more important than the actual football (especially in City's wilderness years).
I do agree with you about crowds though. I don't think it will be that easy for clubs to attract fans back, mainly for economic reasons. If clubs are wise they will slash ticket prices.
 
Can't wait to go back myself. I can see a generation that is not feeling it though, 50 somethings, the squeezed middle I guess - grown children asking for help and aging mum and dad needing help.

After the war there was rationing still for almost a decade and we grew out of it on the back of inflation. It looks like there could be deflation in this situation and a lack of confidence to splash out.
 
When we finally go back into the stadiums, then we will find out what clubs will do to get fans back into the stadiums. The most likely is a small price cut, but a price freeze for next season wouldn't surprise me at all.
 
I meet about 10 people in the concourse before the match and we all sit together in the East Stand block 304. I don't know any of them really, but I miss our few pints and a chat pre match
 
Not sure if it's still the case but when Garry Cook was at the club(so that tells you how long ago this was), but he came to a Supporters Club meeting and mentioned that one of the clubs/owners real concerns was how much older the clubs supporter base was than all other clubs in the top flight, he went on to say all the things they would be doing to change that, but my point is IF that's still the case the club could be hit harder than others in terms of people's willingness to return.
 
I think that, with age, many people simply "grow out" of football enthusiasm. Not all, of course, but many. Football is a habit. Break it, and you simply develop another way of living.

Added to that, nowadays you can still watch most games on TV/streams/whatever. What you lose is the "match experience" and for many older fans especially that is not much of a loss, as the modern "match experience" is basically shit and a rip-off. Speaking for myself, I have only been interested in the football - not some wankpit "entertainer" droning on, or uber-loud music, or crappy lager in plastic glasses. The traditional atmosphere created by the fans is largely dead due to gentrification.

Now of course we are all different, and I am sure that there are thousands absolutely gagging to get back in the Etihad and similar grounds. The $64,000 question is will crowds recover to their former levels? I think there are so many random factors that it is impossible to predict that right now. But it's certain that for many this hiatus has broken "the habit". Will there be new fans, especially youngsters, eager to replace them? Who knows?
 
Could be back in a 20% or a little more, just like in Germany.... But I can't see it in England with so many deaths cause of the feckin covid... Situation in Germany looks ( by the official statistics) better than here...

Probably because they don't have a govt whose collective ears bleed whenever they are expected to think about policy issues.

Your point about the youngsters, us oldies pay ridiculous prices and moan about it but pay because we are/were addicted,
There's no way youngsters on £8.50 pH are going to entertain paying £55 a pop when they can stream anything they want.
Also if the dads drop off the kids that come with them usually paid for by bank of dad will stop too
 
Well whatever happens as soon as I feel it is safe to go back I will be going. However there will be one stipulation.................. I am only going back if I can have my own seat. CB lower Row A Seat 625.... ;-)

At the rate things are going it looks as if I might be celebrating my 80th birthday next May by attending my first match back!! :-) :-) *rofl*

That's true about younger people. I think the pay-as-you watch model will rapidly grow for broadcast football. I did it last week with the Carabao match and it was easy. The price was £10 which wouldn't have paid for my transport if I had attended as usual. Of course I am one of the addicts who likes going to matches but at £10 a go I would pay to watch away games. I think the Sky business model is doomed. I am 61 and stream everything I watch these days.
The world is changing rapidly and no one knows how consumer habits will change. I am optimistic and think that charges for matchgoing fans will have to be reduced because of digital competition.

I'd be OK paying it if it was on TV but I'm not paying a tenner to watch in my laptop when a member on here (thanks!) will send a link to watch it for free on another website
