Bluemoon Angling Thread

Not boring at all mate. Fascinating that you saw them in action. Nice Barbel PW got as well. Must have been knocking on 8lb don't you think? I thought Bob had a touch of melancholy about him this series. Some of the stories he told particularly about his parents were really sad. I used to think Paul Whitehouse was a bit of a 'geezer' before they made these fishing programmes but he does come over as a really lovely open bloke. The wye looked stunning as it always does to me.

I reckon it was about 8lbs. You could tell they were all really chuffed to finally get something. Very enlightening the work that goes into it though. In as much as I thought about it, I assumed there were just those two and a camera man.

I struggle to catch when I'm on my own, I certainly couldn't produce to order.

That's fishing !

I can't be the only fisherman who derives an inordinate and unjustified sense of pride on the odd occasion you get something decent when there's an audience. It happens on the Wye when you have a barbel on and canoeists are passing and stop to gawp.

There's a certain concentrated professional and business-like look you have to adopt when playing the fish. As though it's just an everyday occurrence for an angler as good as you are.

The real skill is looking that good while you reel in a bunch of pond weed or pull badly cast tackle out of a tree ;-)

I tend to have a cigarette in a cigarette holder for such an occasion and drag elegantly on it whilst waving a white Begloved hand at the hoipolloi as they applaud the skill and dexterity of the act. A short bow from the waist suffices on release of the fish accompanied by increased applause and the throwing of bouquets.

happens all the time.

I'm a gibbering wreck if there's anyone watching if and when I land a fish, never had any confidence.

I remember fishing the Ebro a few years ago with two mates. Lovely hot sunny day and Steve had a video cam and decided to make a film of us fishing and the holiday itself. I struck into a nice rod thumping carp. After a few minutes I brought it to the net and Steve was filming it. I got a quick glimpse of it and guestimated a nice common about 15-18lb.
Unbeknown to me is that Steve said something and I turned round to look at him and at that point Gaz nudged the carp and the carp shed the hook. I thought I'd landed a big carp but when I got 'it' on the bank all I had was a fuckin' net full the weed!

I couldn't understand (then) how I had lost a fish but when we went back to our digs Gaz played the footage back. When I turned round he prodded the carp whilst winking at Steve. Good job it wasn't my PB! Great holiday that and I still of a copy of the video. Pity I haven't got a video player though.

with my PB being 16lb i would of fucking murdered him :), never spoke to him again :)

i caught a huge pike on Lymm dam ,as I was reeling it in 4 or 5 people stopped to watch me, you should of seen their faces light up when i showed them my specimen pike a whopping 3.5lb
I had a walk round Lymm dam early summer weighing up a bit of carping. Both pegs either side of dam wall were taken but I fancied a swim in the shallows on left hand bank from the road. Didn't get to fish it though but am considering some winter piking on there. Any idea what size they go to?

just found this on lymm website

Species you could catch here are: large Carp, big Pike, Wells Catfish, Eels, good Perch, Roach, Rudd, Chub, Tench, and lots of big Bream into double figures. Over 25lb Pike are often caught, for these larger pike you should try the Dam Wall and the church shallows.

Thanks for that I'll give it a whirl when we have a cold spell in winter. I'll dig out my thermal boots and make a flask of oxtail soup: )

One of the many things I love about fishing is that you learn something new every time you go out. I do anyway.

Yesterday, with the temperature having dropped a bit I set out to catch some roach and skimmers on quiver thinking I'd get some action at least.

What actually happened was that, from the outset, I got tiny little pulls which were absolutely infuriating me. I scaled down to a 3/4 ounce tip (which I hate doing because I always break them), 1.5lb hooklength and 20s hook but still the fucker wouldn't go round. On it immediately but the sort of bites, if it was windy you'd never see them. Fascinating fishing though. I began to think it might be crayfish though there aren't known to be in there.

Whilst this was going on, my sleeper rod shot off and it was a 16lbs 12oz fully-scaled mirror.

Eventually, a suicidal fish gave me a proper pull and, after a really plucky fight, I got it in and it was a crucian. I've had dozens on float at my rod tip but never before on quiver so I hadn't considered it as a possibility. Not sure what I'd have done differently if I had known mind.

About 2 o'clock the fish went bonkers pulling the tip right round and I lost count how many more crucian I had plus some good skimmers and a bream of about 3 lbs. Only one roach though. Then about 4, it went back tobtiny little tweaks.

Right, last 2/3 weeks have been hectic with work/life and still ongoing, but have somehow wrangled the rest of the day to myself after a trip to hospital this morning, so Im off down the river. I will only have bait that I can find in the fridge/cupboard, so bread and sweetcorn it is, hope the chub are hungry. Been reading this thread a bit without posting and you guys have kept me going through my anglingless period. Wish me luck and I will report back later, hopefully with pics of fish.

As stated earlier I went fishing, had a super couple of hours on the river with ledgered sweetcorn the order of the day, a beautiful chub treble all with no scale damage as far as I could tell, see pics, 3lb8oz, 3lb12oz and 4lb 1oz. Also lost a couple and had a ruffe too, oh and one pic is the bait I managed to find in the kitchen to take.IMG_0372.JPG, enjoying a beer and a browse of Bluemoon now to round off a great afternoon/evening.IMG_0376.JPGIMG_0377.JPGIMG_0378.JPGIMG_0379.JPG

Just posting this here albeit its from the Fail, it is a good pretty accurate article although it does pull its punches. Farmed salmon vs wild salmon and why everyone who is interested in preserving the king of fish should think hard before eating farmed salmon.

There's no justice in the world. My mate caught this rascal whilst fly-fishing at Rutland today !
Man thats a great Perch nomatter who caught it, I have never targeted them but always happy when one turns up. My pb came on the canal about 26yrs ago at over 2lb but it doesnt count now as I reset my catch history when I took fishing up again a few weeks ago. Perch pb is now about 4oz , if I target them this winter I might even better that lol. Didsbury Dave has piqued my interest with that light spinner technique, sounds perfect for a cold days fishing as you can roam and keep moving, probably gonna start on the canal when the boats have given up.
