How good were Pink Floyd?

I have tried and tried to like them.

They are the type of band that when you listen to a few of their more well known songs you think wow these are good I must listen to more. You instantly regret it as it’s pretentious shite. I remember I bought dsotm after hearing a couple of tracks. Possibly the most overrated album ever.

They couldn’t fill a greatest hits album you would be skipping by song six.

Better than led zeppelin mind.

I hated Floyd when I was a punk and thought I'd never like them. A mate introduced me to them in 81and I'd previously only heard Another Brick In The Wall. It took quite a bit of weed for me to mellow me out enough though. I hated them at first but they soon grew on me with each listening to a point where I played their albums regularly. Nowadays I very rarely smoke weed and don't listen to Floyd anywhere near as often, but when I do I really appreciate listening to them. I play Roger Waters solo albums fairly regularly though.

As for Floyd not being a singles band you're right. I once read somewhere that someone had a bet with either Waters or Gilmour that they couldn't produce a no/1 song. And they brought out ABITW which was top of the charts several weeks.

Never been into the weed experience which could be a reason why their never ending nonsense didn’t sit with me. If you have any recommendations on bands that sound better with Stella and whisky let me know:-)

They did a greatest hits album, and they filled it. It’s called “A Collection of Great Dance Songs”.
Only had 6 songs mind ;-)

As I said on this video on the OP has several unknown session musicians, not Nick Mason on Drums and another keyboard player as well as Rick Wright, not Roger Waters on Bass and 2 other guitarists

Pink Floyd as a band could never play as good as these, Gilmour just playing his usual Blues scale (which he is good at), and they always needed 3 girly singers on the 'harder to sing' songs

Probably the most overrated band ever, at least other huge bands like Led Zep, Yes, Deep Purple could actually play theyre music without help.

I once heard Roger Waters say that they developed the stage theatrics like laser shows and blow up pigs and aeroplanes etc to disguise the fact that they were a pretty shit band who sang out of tune.

Still, the dope heads dug them

I dont hate them or anything, I thought DSOTM was a great album, its just I dont think theyre great musicians, if you saw them play on theyre own without all the support guys and huge stage show anybody with half a brain would realise this

I’vs played guitar since I was 12 and if you think Gilmour was in any way an average musician or just “played his usual blues scale“ I think you dont know what you’re talking about mate. His solos were superb - the bends and sustain he could get out of the guitar are up there with the best. Probably not as technical as Steve Howe Or Van Halen but he had a feel for lead playing that is second to none.

I understand your comments about the extra musicians but plenty of bands do it. I sometimes think that Led Zeppelin would have benefited from another guitarist, Queen had an extra man on stage and Genesis for more obvious reasons had two extra musicians. As long as the music is live it doesn't bother me.

So purely out of interest if Floyd are shite and Zeppelin are worse who are your favourite band ?

Bollocks mate, I played in a band 20 years ago and Comfortably Numb and ABIYW were in our repertoire.
I can play those solos easily, I can also play WYEH., Dave got his sustain from effects and overloading his amp. Bending like that is easy with 9 guage strings.
For me he did nothing that clever on guitar but I did like his tone. Dave is effective on the pentatonics with added passing notes, all I'm saying is he's not truly great, neither is Clapton imo.
But PF fans surely are easily offended :)

If you want to hear true innovation on guitar listen to the solo on Kid Charlamagne by Larry Carlton Steely Dan.

Or this lad. Who IS truly brilliant I could never get near this standard. :)

It's got some great songs on it, but Echoes is edited 6 times to around 17 minutes if I remember correctly. A travesty.
