Shocked and desperately sad at this news. Never been so sad at the passing of a musical hero. Knew he'd had some issues but wasn't expecting this.
I've been a huge fan of Van Halen since I saw them support Black Sabbath back in 1978. Saw them another ten times over the years.
Eddie was arguably one of the two most influential rock guitarists - simply a true great.

Can this fucking year get any worse? RIP to an utter legend -- arguably the greatest guitarist (technically) who ever lived; certainly one of my all-time favorites.
