COVID-19 — Coronavirus

On our road, which is a not large cul-de-sac, I have witnessed a lot of my neighbours not following the rules and guidelines. We are told that we should approach them ourselves about it, sod that I am not doing the Governments dirty work for them.

With arrogant/ignorant people like this what hope is there?

Data of the split of England hospital deaths over last two weeks

Total deaths in first week = 263 v this week 373

Total deaths from NW in first week = 101 v this week 151.

You need to be sat down before reading on.....

England hospital deaths today 87 - 41 of them from the North West. Up from 50 and 23 NW last week.

By some distance the worst yet and clear evidence these new measures came far too late. And I fear full lockdown is now starting to look inevitable.

But instead the government are writing to all those who they asked to shield in the original lockdown telling them they have no need to bother this winter.

Is it just me or does this feel increasingly less like the real world than this week's Spitting Image episode?

I fear for a full lockdown, these numbers are becoming an increasing concern. As you say the measures again feel half arsed and too late.

And Northern Ireland tells you very clearly we have acted way too late again.

7 deaths - most here in many months. (v `1 last week)

863 cases (v 669 last week)

Rolling 7 day average 6286 (v 4005 last week)

167 over 80, 663 60 - 79 (13% over 60s)

1827 aged 40 - 59

2518 aged 20 - 39

1111 aged 19 and under

Hospital patients 150 (up 10 on yesterday) (v 85 last week)

Ventilator patients 15 (v 8 last week)

So there have been 106 UK hospital deaths today. A BIG increase and v 63 last week. First time over 100 in months, of course.

Again I would like to hear from those on here two weeks ago so clearly telling some of us we were over reacting and numbers were on target and modest and we were not facing a big increase and it was not a second wave.

Not to shout - but to please tell me if I am still over reacting to these numbers.

As I am really struggling not to over react and be angry at what to me looks a feeble government under reacting very visibly and slow to even do that.

I would really love to see why the escalation over the last week or two has not been very concerning. As that is what it looks like to me.

And I really want to have got this wrong.

And if I have happily apologise to them and to the government. Who I voted for by the way last December. So this is not party political. It is about the future of this country which is outside of any politics and in jeopardy.

Of 1297 infections in Scotland today

166 in those aged over 65
Including 16 aged 85+

57 in those aged under 15
Including 17 aged under 5

277 aged 15-24

797 aged 20-64

As I've said before, the % in those elderly becoming infected should be as low as possible but when the all round figures are as ridiculously high as 1297, even a low % of them being elderly would still equate to a big number. Too big.

Last weeks all settings deaths were 76, but we are well over that already. So anyone's guess sadly today.

The total cases from the three nations without England were 1894.

Today they are 3031.

Thanks Ayrshire that is now a higher % than Northern Ireland in over 65s - which is a very concerning number when it was under half that two or three weeks ago.

Unfortunately - just as N Ireland's 13% has translated into large numbers of deaths for a modestly populated nation we are going to start seeing double figure deaths in the much larger populated Scotland again in coming weeks given these numbers.

Deaths that may well have been prevented had the government listened to Sage 3 weeks ago.

@Healdplace seems the method of calculating % positive cases is under review in Scotland. The constant changing of methods used to calculate things make it difficult to get a grip on what's taking place, although I realise it's importance in terms of accuracy.

You are absolutely right although you have to remember when people were moaning about why people flying into the country weren't being made to quarantine people then moaned when that was introduced. Lockdown they said and when we did it was open up the country. Open the pubs for our mental health, then it's why are we letting people crowd into pubs. The government, not just here but all over world are dammed if they do and dammed if they don't. It's a delicate balancing act which at the moment looks as if it's not right and I fear that it will be at least another four weeks and possibly harsher measures before we start to see a brighter outlook. Ultimately I think the government here is trying to keep the economy going in some ways whilst trying to keep deaths down until a vaccine is available. Selfish attitudes from many don't help though. A guy on the radio this morning summed it up for me when he said we all, young and old, have to ask ourselves what are we doing to help prevent the spread. Are we wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, not mixing etc. If the answer is no then that's why the virus will get out of control. Kind of sums it up really, it's all about taking responsibility ourselves and until that happens we are in for the long haul

but half the country will think the government is going too far with any form of new measures.
Last time / first wave, people voluntarily changed their lifestyles so the R number plummeted in the week before lockdown. Hopefully, people will show the same restraint now and we might possibly avoid the lockdown.

It looks bad and like it's getting worse. But I would say, which you normally do, is Tuesdays are always high as they catch up from the weekend. Just liked yesterday and Saturday it was lower so I think that is important to remember.
