Greater Manchester Politics Thread

Burnham made it abundantly clear the money was until the end of the calendar year as tier 3 was very much a short term thing.

Anyway, he should be on the phone right now taking every penny he can get because his battle is over.
I definately heard him say end of financial year which does tie in with the 90 million. I would imagine even our poor journalists would have picked up on 15 million a month till Xmas isn’t 90 million. I’m guessing scousers and lancs deal is the same in terms of possible length.

I can see there being a big protest march or something at the weekend in town. They have already had hostile "welcomes" when they held conferences - this is now a major standoff.

More ammunition for the government given the lockdown. A massed march, no doubt supported by the opposition and a Labour mayor that will no doubt lead to even more infections, hospital cases and deaths.

That's some length of lockdown/restrictions then dont you think?

Addressing reporters in Manchester, Mr Burnham said leaders of the authorities in Greater Manchester had originally wanted £90 million – £15 million a month until the end of the financial year – to protect incomes for people forced out of work.

I have no idea how long it will last just advising you what he actually said(copied above) if they get it paid monthly till restrictions end I don’t know but that would make sense.

No. If things close now, I can’t see them opening until March time. Not least because, as far as I am aware, the Government haven’t actually made public the criteria to go down in tiers

Its hardly a surprise then he has been told no because no restrictions or furlough has been announced that is lasting until the end of the financial year unless both sides are keeping things from the public?

because they don't know themselves - that science has yet to be followed

Fucking hell! Just thought I’d have a read and you seem to be obsessed with slating a bloke who is trying to do the best for his people.

Scary shit, man.

Im questioning his political approach.

I agree all furloughed should get all their pay and that businesses asked to shut should be protected fully from closure.

That doesnt stop me from thinking Burnham should have entered tier 3 at the very start, did so willingly saying he was protecting the health of people and the NHS but at the same time making it clear he would fight for the financial package needed.

He was always getting more money as per Merseyside and Lancashire, always. He has now given the Government the perfect get out excuse when the shit really hits the fan in the coming weeks.

On another note. At the end of this month people up and down the country are about to realise the reality of the UK's 'benefit' sysytem and that it isn't all its cracked up to be

You mean they will have to wait for their flat screen TV with built in SKY to arrive? The deliveries of Special Brew and 200's of fags will be on time surely?

Don't forget suddenly having 5 kids and all getting cars on mobility because 4 of the kids are fake autistic for more money.

In reality alot of people who this time last year would never have imagined ending up jobless are about see how shite our benefits are!

Benefits?

We have a welfare state cocker. Anyone who says its benefits is a twat and usually a shit stirring one at that.

Mate I was just replying to your post that said end of the year, neither of us know what the payment details are. Im hoping by some fluke we have peaked and cases and deaths start going down.

Unfortunately I don’t think a vaccine is imminent and it wouldn’t surprise me if we are in restrictions for a good while. If you think about it would Burnham or Boris be arguing about 5 million over 6 months if it ended up only 4 weeks. That’s less than a million quid. They are both expecting tier 3 to be with us a while.

Also note how they keep saying tier 3 is the minimum and extra restrictions can be added locally. It doesn’t fill me with confidence tbh.

Meanwhile MP's are just about to take a £3k payrise - thats @ £55 - 56 a week

Manchester is not the only city under siege, so is King’s Landing.

‘Grant Shapps has threatened to seize control of Transport for London unless Sadiq Khan accepts package of measures inc higher council tax, pension reforms, larger congestion charge zone and higher fares in return for rescue funding‘ @FT

No, they'd whine, bitch and point fingers about it, like has been done with every march this year (along with people on beaches, those morons who were morris dancing etc) but so far not one of those had lead to any increase in illness amongst those who were there.

Better speak to DWP then as my Mrs was on the phone to then saying they accidentally stopped her disability benefit due to sending a letter to a wrong address. Also throw in years of the Sun Mail and Channel 5 making out the welfare system is the benefit system.
