Porto (h) post-match thread

We need a midfielder in the mould of De Jong. A tenacious, speedy, nasty bastard to be put it bluntly. Win the ball back, be in the right place at the right time and be almost feared on the pitch. All of our players are too nice. De Jong or even Komps or Fernandinho would have left one on Pepe tonight which he would have deserved.

It was a shit pass, but we rarely score from the same situation.
I wasn't really thinking of his pass, more the defending after it, not a single defender did anything of note, I sat there thinking "do something, anyone", they didn't, wasn't particularly impressed by Edersons effort either.

The Porto player simply took the opportunity given him, defending like that belongs to Sunday parks, all of the players, not singling any out, all of them, and a couple of midfielders who were trotting back.

Shit.

No to Rice & Phillips from me.

Not a fan of Gundogan but I agree he wasn't the main offender tonight.

Rodri was often stood directly with a player between him & the ball, leaving no out ball, exactly how Pep coaches players not to position themselves. When he did appear, there was often no point in passing to him as he just played it where it came from.

I'd rather have a player there who is seriously good at winning the ball stopping attacks or creating & shit at the other, than one who is average at both.

I'm not sure who scouted him and thought he would be a good fit for our system, it's bizarre.

Yeah but the player left Dias' area & moved into Garcias, who positioned himself to hide out of the way behind Rodri, who was fucking shite, then Cancelo, who was fucking unforgiveably shite & finally just watched as the bloke scored.

If he'd gone toward Dias it would have been his problem but he headed for the team turds instead.

I've not been a fan of Rice. But I think that's more about how he plays the game than his ability. He's being coached in that typically English approach to being a defensive mid. Where you stand as still as possible just in front of back four and only get involved in the game when you really have to.
In the recent England match when Maguire got sent off I thought Rice changed completely. He was on the front foot making interceptions and driving the team forward. Maybe there is a player in there?

Rodris attempted tackle/jump out the way/do fuck all was only bettered by Cancelos feeble attempt to again, do fuck all as the player beat him and slammed it in. Absolute garbage and not Dias fault.

I don't think he's shit, just too Rodrish to gamble on.

Imagine ending up with 2 twins plus Gundogan, to keep happy over a season ?

This team needs a lot of work on the defence. We cant keep forking out on defenders and seeing the same old mistakes.

To be fair to Cancelo because he's a right footer playing on the left there was never a decent opportunity for him to make a tackle when the bloke ran across him from the right. He didn't have to shape up like a gimp though.

There is a thing called communication, if he could see it all develop then he could try and get someone to do something, anyone, nobody did a thing.

From a team perspective it was a dreadful goal to concede, but at that point there didn't appear to be a "team" ethic, just a bunch of footballers doing their own bad things, it was Sunday league standard much of that first half, from the "team".

My mate texted me at HT and said it was our worst performance in a few years, it was hard to argue, and given we've already lost 2-5 at home this season, that's quite a statement, we were very lucky it was still 1-1 thanks to KW.

I’m not a fan either. He’s not particularly good at anything. His passing never breaks the lines, he’s often caught wrong side, he’s slow on the ball and without it...

The worst part is the idea we need to get new players around him. It’s like the Rags with ‘Release Pogba’. Rodri shouldn’t be a player we need to find the right balance with, he should be doing it for other players who are much better than him.

I think he could make it here as a converted CB but unless there’s dramatic improvement he’s a big problem in our midfield in 90% of our games.
Worst part of his game is that he is too easy to play around.

Gimp just about sums up the whole lot them for that goal, it's not unusual for us to concede shit goals, but that one surpassed most by some distance starting with the awful pass out, and the then lack of effort to actually defend.

Anyway there's no point dwelling on it too much, we won.

Laporte and Ake injured that’s why we had the same mistakes.judge the defence after Laporte and Dias have a run of games. Look how disjointed we our currently in attack. Settled 7-8 players needed each game to see us back to our best.

If Ake or Laporte had been playing, we wouldn't have required Rodri or Cancelo to do anything imo.
