3 very good games in a row now from Gundogan and popping up with vital goals. Gives us the control we miss from Silva’s absence. Hoping we see him in the 6 role with kdb and Bernardo/Foden infront of him once we’ve got everyone back fit, that’s how we start smashing these sides that are playing 5 at the back and making us struggle.

1 very good game and 2 very mediocre at best games, it should be the other way round at a bare minimum, last night should be more of the norm. It was much better though, we shouldn't have to be pleasantly surprised when he plays like that though.

Looked off the pace even against a really poor side. The flicks etc look great and his technical ability is unquestionable. The pressing and non-existent tackling looked poor. Foden is a better player and would suit the role gundo had last night much more imo. Talking about him walking into any top midfield in Europe is laughable.

We look much more in control when he plays
Except when we concede possession and we are suddenly a man down.He might retain possession well, with his predominantly sideways passing, but he also kills the majority of our momentum as he operates on a much slower platform than the athletes around him.He becomes a liability when the opposition break.

He rarely does anything plenty of other midfielders couldn't do,minus the mobility, energy and impetus.

He's like a 15yr old labrador in a field of young Terriers and Mastiffs.

I'm not convinced he'd get in any other top 6 side in this league, never mind Europe.

Amusing how the big hard lads on here continually call out Gundogan for being a soft shite , in reality if any of them went in with a 50/50 challenge Gundogan being a professional athlete would snap them in two , there's plenty of hard bastards on a keyboard.

Another performance of seemless quality control from Ilkay, when he does what he does last night we dominate teams as they cant get near us and he just keeps it simple and keeps the opposition moving to cover. Last night was perfect from him, plus he got a goal, a part of his game that is under rated is his ability to get on the end of things and finish.

Keeping the game simple is often missed in football, fans love the 40 yard defence splitting balls , but somebody has to get the ball to the player who does that and create the space for it to be done. Ilkay is a master at this. His constant metronomic movement of the ball over short passes makes the sspace for the likes of Kev to exploit.

An excellent performance from him last night and if his critics think otherwise then they must have been watching a different game to me.
An excellent post and you said it all.Having said that there are plenty on here with a different view that he is slow, negative and soft as shite. They would much rather see a City team that just gets stuck in, hoofs it long and chases after it rather than play the football that pep promotes despite us scoring 100 goals a season ! They wish the pitches were muddy, tackles flying in, thugs getting away with shocking tackles.etc.etc and their ideal centre mid is your Bryan Robsons etc when England won the square root of eff all playing that way!

He doesn’t do 50/50 tackles so we’d never find out.

Gundo is slow, doesn’t tackle and due to his superior technical ability makes up for this in Europe but is lost in the prem league which should be his and the the clubs bread and butter. Remind me what England have won in lately?

Your post, yesterday, was obscenely insulting and now you damn him with faint praise.

Imagine how much better we'd become if we had a player with his technical ability added to a direct mindset and the ability to recover poor play and break up attacks.

That's what we need to find.

Our problem isn't gundogan, our problem is David silva imo, we have control without the penetrative balls that David produced, hence struggling to kill teams off

Merlin had a good season considering he was getting to the veteran stage of his career and a lot of people saying Foden or Bernardo could fill his shoes , but Merlin was a one-off , a bit like Aguero and Vinnie players of their ilk are virtually impossible to find , our scouting network has a big job to do.

Correct. During the last few games he has in each of them produced at least one world class pass to create a great chance. For me, like you say, Gundo is given a tough ride by some because he doesn't charge about all the time. I think he's been a very good signing but was very unfortunate with the bad knee injury when he first arrived. Knees can be a nightmare and it takes a long, long time to get over a serious one. I bet Dick Van Dyke over on Merseyside takes a while to get back to previous levels.

My only critic of Gundo is when we are up by one goal he can sometimes revert into playing needless one twos with a centre back - that said as with most midfielders he needs movement and options ahead of him and when he has those he looks much better. An important part of the squad and the least of any problems.

If he was playing in the 1970s at the Shay on a cold wet Monday night in December you may have a point. But as its 2020, pitches are superb, technical ability is higher and 50/50 tackles are rarer than hens teeth you don't. The game especially when you press so high is about forcing mistakes and intercepting the ball rather than tackling the player.

You may long for the days when Mick Doyle and Chopper Harris had a 50/50 that made you wince, I don't, I prefer to see players with quality using their brain and awareness of space to intercept and put us on the front foot. That is a guaranteed 100% possession winner, a 50/50 by definition means you lose half of them.

It's the truth, end of. He was good but that just proves that the previous 2 performances were on him, he's shown he can play at that level so that should be the norm, we shouldn't have to dress up the 2 very mediocre performances before it and be grateful that he turns in a performance we expect for once.

By 50/50 it's the ones that often him and Mahrez are favourites for but it means sticking their foot in and risking a clattering to win the ball back, so they hesitate or flinch and the opposition nick it and break, whereas Dave and Kev take the kick on the ankle and soldier on.

That being said, cracking hack down last night so he can do it when he fancies it.
