why do they focus so much on counties when it's the overall vote per state that matters?

Because the counties are a good gage of the way the state is going. Can compare to past elections, know what numbers you need in other counties etc...

It's confusing watching places being 'projected wins' with 1% or 2%.

Is they doing that based on exit polls?

Certain places are just nailed on. California and New York for example

You can't run a campaign on "I'm not the other guy". It's just not enough.

I've always been of the opinion it's probably going to be close.
Anyone who is convinced of either has probably already been in for a rude awakening
