We've just been out and picked up a takeaway, and it just doesn't feel like anything has changed, other than retail shops being shut and not being able to sit inside cafes/restaurants,everywhere is crawling with folk.

This is not even close to a Lockdown,no one gives a shit by looks of it.

yep. Same feeling to be honest , everyone I know is still going round to see there family, mates meeting up on a smaller scale, busy out on the roads. everyone bored with the covid news. Doesn’t feel like a lockdown at all.

I can see the main road through our town from the bedroom, and just after midnight lots of people still out on the road, obviously not people "staying at home. apart from shopping, work, medical needs, or exercise".

well it will go one of 2 ways, either prove tier 3 was enough to keep it at a certain level, or it will spike further and we'll be hit with a harder lockdown over Christmas. People are making their choices...

Best part of 90k cases in France yesterday and only 304 deaths - but non hospital deaths are only announced 3 times a week.

Over 800 deaths the previous day though.

The rise in cases over yesterday is over 30%.

plus, didn't they all evacuate Paris to go "home"? Given it was said they locked down a bit later in their curve, maybe it's a case they've all taken it home with them, especially as it came in after everyone had gone on holidays?

I'm still a bit confused BA. Whilst I understand what you're saying re our immune systems and secondary infection whether by a new variant or otherwise, isn't this a bigger concern for those who haven't yet been infected and are in the constant lockdown/release cycle whilst awaiting a vaccine? Particularly if, as I say, the vaccines which are in production might be much less effective or actually completely ineffective against the new variant?

What I mean is, this news might not mean so much for those who've had covid already, but for those who've not (the vast majority of the population) ...its potentially huge?

Willing to be corrected btw, but that's my take on everything I've read on this.

Well my interpretation was that the issue is people catching this variant before they have a vaccine, as it may not work on someone who's got a variant that can bypass their immune system (and likely cripple them). I think the point may be that once you've had a vaccine, then if you catch this variant your immune system will be trained, but we won't necessarily be able to train an immune system that's already compromised by a variant that bypasses it, which may cause a bundle of problems for them.

That's how I've read the back and forth anyway.
If someone over 55 or with an underlying condition gets either virus it is bad news. The new variant COULD be worse news.
If they already had the virus and get the new variant its UNLIKELY to be worse than the previous variant and LIKELY to be a lot less severe. T-cells are your fiend and spot similar things to what has been encountered previously.
The new variant could be worse the second time round but its highly UNLIKELY.
The point of species transmission is the most dangerous time for a virus - once in another species mutations generally make the virus less dangerous but more infectious. The press seem to think this is bad for the new variant but my virus statistics friend says it is UNLIKELY to be that bad as the previous species was the same as the new one.
All words inferring probability are capitalised.

Over the whole pandemic about 50% of ours, our capacity is supposedly now over 500k per day, and we're nowhere near testing that number. Don't know if they have ramped up recently or not.
i went for a test last week, phoned at 7.00am had my test by 9.15am results by 7am the next morning , the whole testing took 2 minutes, the place was empty , i think the capacity it there to test 500k ,but you are not allowed a test unless you have symptoms , they should start with the essential workers ,get those tested then work their way through the nation

That's why they are able to random test in places like Liverpool due to spare capacity

Very similar experience to me with mine. Booked it Friday night for yesterday and had the result on my phone when I woke up this morning. They seem to have got a grip on things in that regard now anyway.

Not really.
Just scare tactics to try and get the Covidiots in line.
The only worry is for folks who haven't had it - it may be worse than earlier editions. The vast majority of those who have had it will not have it worse the 2nd time round.
The only worry is those who haven't had it yet.
We really need to infect healthy under 30 volunteers without underlying conditions if the vaccine isn't ready yet. Its a numbers game - the more people who have had it and survive without many symptoms the better.
And something posters having been saying for quite some time.
Let the under 30s get on with their lives and anyone older who wishes to shield is given full support (including financial) to do so.

Me and my wife went the other week, didn't even book, just walked up said we had symptoms and got a test. Not a single person there other than a few stewards. That was Stockport town centre.

i saw him mate but didn’t hug him. I am on site all week and lots and lots of people getting it who I come into contact with. My dad would be Bolloxed if he got this. He has heart issues and also it is not fair on his wife who has had cancer several time’s as well. They have not even in shops or done anything at all for ages. I could never forgive myself if he got it off me and it felt a bit like if I hugged him he was being exposed to all the people I am seeing.

Told him how much I love him and we had a great chat from a good distance.

Want to be hugging him for many more years yet.

Sorry to hear that mate it’s a really shit time for a lot of people at the moment. All the best to him and your goodself.
