get the schools as close to Christmas and then shut them early for a month over Christmas would be my guess.

Yeah that's what I think we'll happen. Xmas and first 2 weeks of Jan. No one spends any money then anyway as they're all skint from Xmas so won't harm the economy as much.

Schools being open is like blowing your nose to get rid of your germs then eating the tissue.
Agree working in the high street this week the amount of school kids in that area. The high street was busy at dinner time as school kids came out to buy their dinner. Also throughout the day kids were walking around in groups, some buying from phone shops etc. Guessing these kids should be in self isolation, or a lot are bunking off.
It's clear round here that school kids are not social distancing and our area has gone to being the highest area in kent. It's not just school kids as we have lots of shops 'open' by that I mean you knock on the door and they come and serve you or they send you round the back alley. We have lots of phone, pawn, jewellery shops 'open'.

I saw all this as I was working in the high street ;)

With hindsight, would they do that again? I doubt it and the fact they aren't at the moment backs that up. It was 100% the right thing to do at the time in not debating that as we didn't know which way it would go.
Some Individual hospitals are reducing some elective procedures now. This will happen more if more seriously ill Covid patients are hospitalised and the last 2 days positive test numbers indicate that’s likely.

It’s a question of demand vs capacity, complicated by needing to avoid spreading the virus in hospitals and having significant numbers of staff isolating or ill with Covid.

This isn't much like the first lockdown from what I can see.

Then: Traffic was down. Handful of cars sometimes at the major lights. Now, seems exactly the same as normal. Queues everywhere.

Then: Supermarkets queuing orderly outside, quiet inside. Big shops only. Now, it's exactly the same as normal.

Town & About: A handful of people sitting in public places. Now, there are people everywhere.

I really think that people might have been a lot more focused for a two-week circuit breaker, shut it all down. This is just a bind for most people, who are going about their lives to all intents and purposes.

God knows what happens now. I'm not really going to suggest we need a stronger lockdown. Better, more positive messaging, sure. Show people putting on masks, taking steps. Do it publicly and with a thumbs up.
For better or worse I dont think the government ever suggested this was the same as the last lockdown. But when people say 'its the same as normal, they dont really mean normal. They mean 2 weeks ago. Normal would be people getting married this weekend, people going on holiday, people in Manchester Christmas shopping, people heading to watch footy, kids playing for their football team, someone having an 18th/21st do, people in bars and night clubs. I agree that what we have is probably a waste of time, but normal it certainly isnt.

Traffic is almost as busy as ever. Definitely not the same. I know people going into our office for no other reason than they have had enough of being at home even though the message was pretty clear about working from home if you can. The car park on our business park was busy the other day when I went to pick up some printing equipment. Asda before full of people dragging their kids around - full families. People stood right next to you in the aisles. Nothing like first lockdown so not sure what effect it will have. Probably a little but nothing major.

It is very strange, you'd have thought certainly in the NW that everyone would know a family member who has been poorly, in hospital or died and that some sort of sensible thought process would be happening in their heads.

It would appear not for some. My mum is in hospital currently, not Covid thankfully but some breathing difficulties and got moved wards at 4am the other night as they needed the ward for Covid patients as the other bit was full. It still a big problem in the NW.

I do wonder what roads you are looking at because the traffic is far less than normal. An hour long commute is currently taking 30minutes including travelling a quarter of the m60 ring at “rush hour” and it is free flowing all the way.

Totally agree. Mask wearing in especially the under 30s is not good enough from my experiences in shops.

I’ve taken to holding my breath whilst passing such cretins.
Completely the opposite for me, young people under 30 around here very compliant, middle aged not so much.Old people wearing it but taking it down to speak or wearing it as a chingaurd.

Govt messaging has been poor. They haven’t reached out into enough areas of media to get the message across, and they have been too soft with their language.

They’ve relied on BBC and Sky News to be their only outlet of their messaging. It’s been nowhere near enough.

They should have had regular clips of a variety of role models for a variety of ages across all platforms of social media putting the message of hand-washing, mask-wearing, social-distancing and staying at home. Every day!

Musicians, sportsmen, actors, YouTubers, as well as MPs, scientists and doctors... should have been on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, as well as all the TV and radio stations... between every video, post and programme, and on their own videos and posts, on those platforms. Every day!

Also, the namby-pamby way they’ve talked hasn’t helped. There should have been far more threatening and harsh language used in their statements. “We will fine you”, “we will arrest you”, “your ignorance and stupidity is spreading this virus”, “you are killing people” should have been part of the messaging.

Although, just as bad as any govt mistake, far too many people in this country who know fine well what the rules are anyway, haven’t followed the rules. They deserve to have a lockdown in place over Christmas, these cunts. As well as celebrities being role models for people, people in society are role models for others in society too. And too many people, who have people who look up to them, have just ignored the rules and it becomes a culture.

What concerns me is the amount of people who do wear masks but can’t wear them properly

Its not hard to wear a mask, but some people find it very difficult

They don’t find it difficult. They can’t be arsed to wear them properly. Many think mask wearing, and the virus in general, is a load of shit, so tokenly wear them around their chin just because they know they have to wear a mask but don’t want to.

The real issue is, and I’ve said this plenty of times, if you tell people it’s not safe and to follow guidelines they in the most part will. If you then throw in the caveat that it’s still ok for all your kids to go to school and colleges using public transport etc then that original message becomes one people don’t believe or trust.
Most adults would go out of their way to protect a child, not necessarily their own, as that’s just human nature, being told it’s safe for kids to go out was always going to fuck up this lockdown, if it’s safe for them it’s safe for all, the first one was much more disciplined due to there being little ambiguity in the message.

Nothing worse than the members of the so called high society telling us plebs what to do.

All these people are likely to be social people who meet lots of people in their day to day life aka the worst sort of role model to stop spreading infection.

Only people worth listening to is the scientists and doctors.
