I think people who play the drums realise how good a drummer he is. The problem for Phil Collins us the solo tripe he churned out in the 80s - he’s remembered for that more than his excellent work with Genesis which annoys me. Contrast that with Gabriel whose solo stuff is praised for it’s integrity and lack of commercial attraction. As Collins says in his biography Gabriel got the critical acclaim whilst he got the cash.

i hope the gig goes ahead OB1 - always a great event.

Had a few Hillage albums including Green and Live Herald.
I suppose he is as much Prog Rock as some mentioned.

The terminology never really mattered to me at the time but I always heard him described as Space Rock or Psychedelic.

I think he's also slated by prog fans for turning Genesis into a more mainstream poppy band after Gabriel was kinda got rid off.
Albums like Abacrap and And Then They Were Twee :) ensued.
People guessed who the main motivator was when You Cant Hurry Love appeared.
He's by no means my favourite drummer but he was a naturally gifted one.

The OP asked for obscure bands, so I'm going with Utopia, and the album Ra. I thought it was a brilliant album in the dope fuelled world of my teens, if only for their song about Nagasaki. Yeah, don't you ever forget.

I listened to it on spotify not too long ago, and, well, it's not quite as good as I remember it, but that doesn't detract from the pleasure it gave me 40 odd years ago.

Todd and Co made some decent stuff - I've got five of their albums on cd.

Saw them support Zep at Knebworth. Ra sure but I would count them as rare but who cares.

its a fair accusation to be honest. Hiring the horn section from Earth Wind and Fire on a Genesis album was unforgivable.
There was an interim period up to Duke when they were still making decent albums but it all went down hill after that (the odd track excepted) . I akways wonder whether the other too wanted more of a pop sound too - Tony Banks was always one to speak his mind if he didn’t like something

"Hello Dawn" by Steve Hillage always reminds me of the day my son was born. It was one of tgem songs that gets stuck in your head but the lyrics just kind of fitted how a new baby changed our lives!

I love Rainbow Dome Music. Not heard it for a while but great album.

He also did some 'rave' stuff with Eat Static later on which was pretty good.
 
This 70s German Band were excellent in my opinion sang in English as well.
Beautiful album, excellent musicians

Last sentence there gets to the key conundrum about the band. I used to think Banks was the keeper of the prog flame, but having heard In Too Deep etc, I’m not so sure. I do think it’s clear that Rutherford developed pop sensibilities early on (the dirge that is Your Own Special Way springs to mind), so maybe things weren’t clear cut.
I guess what you say about Banks is true, but after 81, there must have been an elephant in the room at Genesis get-togethers and writing sessions, which was that if Collins didn’t like it - the song or the band - it wasn’t gonna happen!

Yes Chester you got the feeling that Banks knew he couldn’t have made it solo - he needed the band more than the other two. Genesis always prided themselves on being a democracy but I’m not sure that was totally the case (though this apparently hastened Gabriel’s departure). I saw a documentary on Queen last week and whoever wrote the song dictated the arrangement,the mix and everything but the songs were chosen democratically.I suspect as you say that as time passed in some Genesis members were more equal than others and some members had more say in the sound and tracks chosen.

Actually I don’t mind ”Your own Special Way’ except for the instrumental passage in the middle which is awful. I agree It’s not prog though. One for the Vine on the same album is excellent and is much more in the prog vein

Saw them at FreeTrade Hall about 1975, got invited down to their dressing room afterwards to meet the band.
 


Put some good quality headphones on. Perhaps add a poison of your choice, although I don't think it needs it. Make sure no-one else is around to distract you. Turn it up. Go.

Didn't know about his Eat Static connection but as they are an off shoot of Ozric Tentacles it wouldn't surprise me.
He did, however, have a great success as System 7 from the late 80s onwards. Techno, trance ambient house. Blissful.
The Orb used him often.
