COVID-19 — Coronavirus

The problem Rashford has had especially is we live in the time of a pandemic but also the whole woke thing. It is seen by certain people that it is woke to feed starving children or woke to be seen to help people in the pandemic.

Those people couldn't be any further detached from popular opinion or reality. The vast majority of people recognise that people will need help and they should be given all the help they need.

I think Boris has recognised this and that's why things will start to move away from people like Cummings who represented this populist, anti-woke, Laurence Fox type of politics which as it turns out isn't so populist after all.
That is possible and I hope you are right.

I saw a headline that Germany is considering distributing high filter masks to the most vulnerable.

I hate wearing a mask but nevertheless if it offers some protection forget about the social effects if it reduces transmission. Any debate there was about herd immunity is over now. We just slow the spread as much as possible and hope the vaccines come through asap.

What frustrates me about the public presentation of the data is, as you see from the media posts that Kaz reproduces, numbers are always being phrased in the most negative way.

Yes, if it calls for it you need to be honest and do that. But citing what were actually pretty good Sunday death data as if they are bad because they are the highest since May is needless. Every day that rises will be. Its pretty obvious.

So - factually true - yes - in so far as it goes. But what it misses entirely is the context of the week to week rise - which in the current pandemic is way more significant than being the highest number since the first wave - which is a bit like saying it is colder today than it was in May. True, but not the main thing you need to know about the weather right now.

I cite this kind of data too but not without background and any mitigation.

The numbers in hospital deaths yesterday were week to week in the nations Scotland 3 down to 0, Wales 19 down to 16. N Ireland 7 up to 9 and England 122 up to 133.

Two of the four nations fell week to week and the other 2 rose by an amount that is hard to characterise as worrying.

And the overall numbers in context were of a slowing of the increase.

Balanced reporting should not be focusing on doom and gloom to the exclusion of context.

Yes it is important to be real and stress when numbers are bad and get across that this is no cakewalk and things are serious but if you are informing the public that needs to be tempered with honesty as and when things look brighter from a wider context than just more people died today than yesterday.

The whole story is not told by simple mathematics.
Get over it ffs

The numbers are given daily by sky , bottom line numbers and also plenty of graphs and explaination , what is happening in different areas, i want to know what is happening down here, it is not all about the north of england , yours is not the only way to present it and i prefer the easier to understand way , it doesnt take a thousand words to get the patterns

Kaz, I do not care one bit if you read nothing I post. It is your free choice. So there is nothing to 'get over'.

But I have worked in or with the media all my life and I know the difference between telling the truth and telling the truth you want people to believe. I have been involved in front page tabloid stories so I have seen the difference first hand.

Most mass media engage in both when it suits.

Well then you are not reading the links, plenty of graphs and discussion, you seem to have a bee in your bonnet of data being posted that is not yours, there is more than one way to present , i want to know what is happenig everywhere not just the north

That is simply untrue on every count, Kaz. I am sorry you think that way. I find graphs and charts very helpful and do look at them. And do not go around dissing other people's data in here.

I was just making a general point a bout how the mass media (most of it) emphasise the bad news to the deteriment of the good. It creates an imbalance that is all.

It had nothing at all to do with you posting it. Indeed I am happy you do. As I would not see it otherwise.

And I do not give two hoots that probably 90% of this list likely do not read my posts as they are too complicated.

I would not be posting them here if I cared about validation. I would be on Twitter where you can get an army of fans very easily whatever you choose to say or do.

Our Year 5 class sent home today - child tested positive. Did the pupil get it in school, home, elsewhere? Who knows, but I do know 30 pupils will now be at home for 2 weeks and all the implications that has for parents. As Ric said so eloquently, it is an almost impossible task for anyone to make the right call on this.

Misery loves company

Typical of us to buy the more complicated to transport and store one

Pretty much everything this govt has done in its COVID response has been late, inept or just plain wrong.

But their vaccine procurement strategy has been very sound - a large number of a range of different technologies and sources all with substantial volumes. And the Moderna one will not even be available here for months.

The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are very similar.

Also, Moderna seem to be set on profiteering AFAICT - twice the price of Pfizer and 10x the price of AstraZeneca.

Rude

I think given the spread in schools I think masks should be worn by pupils at all times and right through lessons. Obviously they need to close but until they do this has to be done

Ah i didnt know about the cost difference , although by the time places that will administer the vaccine get storage that can keep it cold enough it might be a false economy ?

You can buy a lot of dry ice for an extra £20 a vial!

Might also be worth saying that at the time of agreeing supplies, the storage conditions had probably not been finalised, and were likely awaiting data.

Seems to me that she has an issue with your stats being what people look out for on the thread and not being the main contributor. Noticed this more and more. Don't let her put you off posting your data and opinion as Karen is always the first to offer hers.
