Great position to be in.

If Barca are reasonable with their negotiations in January, we hopefully get Messi, 6 months sooner, to help us this season in the CL.

If they play hardball they have a potentially unhappy player and have to pay him £30m loyalty bonus in summer.

(Keeping Garcia in summer might prove a useful bargaining chip in January?)

The elections are the limiting factor, the interim management council is not in a position to make any significant club decisions and moving Messi would certainly fall into that category. If they can move them up into 3rd week of December, then yes very likely to happen in January (Provided the new board can't convince him to stay until end of season)

As an FYI, there's a lot of shady things going on with respect to the timing of the election

Exactly straight swap maybe small amount of cash 10 m that would be my offer

Very difficult to see Messi moving in January IMO. More possibility that he signs a pre contract in January

The way I see it Barca need money and Jan is the last ever chance to cash in on Messi.

That said not sure City will offer that much. Logic says half as much as was offered in the summer and back then the clubs were a long way apart.

Does Barca having an interim board not make this harder?

Do the potential new management teams want Messi there or not? IS it not easier fro them to have Messi sold before they get in.

If Barca are financially in trouble like reported then they'd be utter idiots not to take €50m + Garcia. Also this seasons books would not include half of Messi's wage which is about €50m.

Its a pretty good situation for the current interim board, they can cite selling Messi to save the club. Everyone is a winner.

However I think Messi would rather see out his season there, there is faint hope Barca will get some fans back in the stadium and he will want to say goodbye.

Wouldn't Barca be paying 33 million euros as loyalty bonus to Messi when he leaves next summer? I can't imagine even Barca are that stupid to not cash in on him in January. They are potentially looking at saving more than 100 million euros.

The Barcelona financials regarding Messi would I assume be similar to the ones that City would use as in the club sponsors are basically paying his wages. So keeping him wouldn't cost them.

Sponsors doesn't pay his wage, they just pay more to the club due to Messi. Rakuten already reduced their sponsorship.

But the extra sponsorship wont be that much that it entirely covers Messi's wage. Maybe half of it at best.

to suggest that Messi is a free player for Barca is ludicrous.

Well I’m definitely fed up with Mahrez and wouldn’t pass up on a few years with this magician.

I'm not convinced that we would even offer 50m for Messi in January. It's not a small sum. Especially when you take into account his salary as well.

We also need the money for an Aguero replacement. Which won't be cheap. As well as an LB and a Ferna replacement in the summer.

Pre agreement in Jan imo for his move in the summer. Same terms as offered in the summer just Barca dont get a transfer fee as a result.

It makes financial sense to sell him, but it's all politics. If they refuse to sell him then they can claim he's the bad guy who ran down his contract and there was nothing they could do. They won't want there legacy to be the people that sold Messi

I think we are past that, with the Messi interview and the media coverage showing the true state of the club not a single Barca fan would blame Messi for leaving at the end of his contract. The only spin they can really go for is saying we sold him to save the club as Barca was here before Messi and it will be here after.

It was mentioned earlier but Iv not seen it confirmed or denied, are the interim board allowed to sell him? I’m sure I heard they couldn’t make big decisions like that but then surly they have to be able to sell players if the club needs money?
Not sure on how it works.

Iv just looked it up and answered my own question.
The interim president said himself at the start of November that he will be looking to strengthen in January but will only be able to do so if he sells players first.
Makes sense to sell Messi for 50mill get Garcia on a free and then use the money to get 2 new players in.
Would be crazy to keep him, lose more money than have to try replace him in the summer anyway but without the extra 50mill and wages and loyalty bonus saved.
