I believe Messi is owed a £32m loyalty bonus next summer from Barca if he sees out his deal.

Essentially, was written into his agreement to stagger his weekly pay and him making sure he got paid at the back end.

I very much doubt he will give up on that for a January move.

Perhaps he will come to another arrangement akin to his recent wage deferral, so he can leave next month.

still think we will get him mate?

I do. Pep instigated his recent contract renewal and believe that is down to Messi further underlining his desire to come here.
I'm sorry, in what way has pep instigated that? Not arguing he hasn't, just not in anything i've seen, hence the question.

Clearly still an outstanding player. And that was against a very disciplined Juventus defence.

However the backing music is truly awful, who buys this stuff?
Fortunately (by the sounds of it) I had it on silent.

As is obvious from @BlueHammer85’s Bluemoon top 100 songs, people clearly have some awful musical tastes.

On top of handsome wages (given his fee would be low in January or not at all in Summer), we can offer Pep and Aguero too. As well as a hierarchy he can trust in Txiki and Sorriano. The project he cited as the reason to want to leave Barca is also here at City including, as you say, longevity in terms of an actual footballing plan.

PSG can offer money (which he’s not short of), rights and Neymar.

Are we sure about Aguero?

But how much money does he really need, I know it is a huge amount but if he truly wants a new challenge then he could use this as the tool to get his wish.

If he did Barca would save £32 million, say we agreed a £20 million token transfer fee to get him in January then that make it a tough decision for them to make.

Any rumblings from your contacts as to whether it could happen this Jan?

Not based on the amounts he is owed or Barca's continued reluctance to pay a fee for Garcia.

I'd assume there might be a stage-managed announcement in Jan, revealing to the world he has signed a pre-contract agreement with us.

It ticks a variety of boxes on both sides.

Messi gets to explain his thinking and gets the proper long send-off he deserves from the fans.

City get six months to prepare the club for unprecedented demands for access and commercial deals.

But we don't need to offer Barca anything. If Messi is owed cash, that's the only leverage he'd require, should he offer to accept even 50 per cent less that what is due to him in bonuses and already deferred wages.

That's the only way Jan happens. That, or a direct swap for Garcia.

The question would be, why would messi lose out on 32m (if there is any truth to the bonus, or the amount) and why would we lose 20m, for something that can happen in 6 months anyway, if both are confident in it.

There are arguments why (lets say as you mention a token) 20m would be worth it to get a player like that for the rest of this campaign. To secure his arrival, not so much, if he is willing to secure a pre contract.

If he was to sign a pre-contract agreement, is that binding and absolute commitment to joining city?

Better have him sign for the summer. Time it for the 1 week it's sunny to con him into thinking Manchester is sone paradise..

The more i think about it the more I think I'd rather he came in the summer.

I think he'd have a better chance of really hitting the ground running so we don't have to go through the "hes past it" stage, and also I think we might win the CL this season without him, there's just something about the defence and the rest of the competition and this focus on individual responsibility that Pep has right now that makes me think this year will be the one. If you add Messi then it can easily revert to passing up responsibility.

Not that I'd complain if he turned up in January or anything...
