The ones arguing unfair on Stockport and Tameside and Trafford - the lowest 3 boroughs right now - only Tameside is currently under 100 Pop score and only just. Most of GM has been on the rise slowly for the last week or so.

Nothing drastic yet but for the sake of a week before Christmas and a week after it before the tiers are axed (as they will be) it is not worth the gamble.

I hope they let fans in though to make it fair all round. As that is unreasonable given that this is outside where they really want people to be this time of year. Not inside watching it with mates.

But leaving Cheshire East out will hurt Cheshire East I suspect. Cases already being imported there from South Manchester and that will now shoot up over the next two weeks.

I do hope I am wrong about that. But it looks likely.

do you think the correct decision has been made?

If it’s your families life work to own and run pubs, as some have, it’s very difficult to justify it to them.

A fella I know, who runs his own company in hospitality has been driven to despair and it’s driven him to the opinion that we should have continued as normal with some restrictions but hospitality continuing

Sounds selfish but his life work is going up in smoke and he nearly lost his house.

I am of your opinion, a life is more precious than a house but I do feel very sorry for him.

The tiered system is fucking stupid and as a business owner you would be livid if a pub round the corner can be open but yours can't.

Bristol is at 124 per 100k and is tier 2, Stockport is 107.7 - Tier 3.

So you’re one of those he/she’s ?
Nope. I don't understand any of that identify as a toadstool lesbian stuff. Must be my age I guess. MY hubby was a scouser and Liverpool fan and he would never have stood for that kind of thing. His brother was (still is) a City fan and his sister an Everton fan so he had enough confusion in his life already.

Hard call but I think it is safer over the next two weeks yes. I think straight after Christmas we will have different rules everywhere and the tiers will go.

They will not be good enough to deal with the escalation and wave 3 that will come as a last hurrah in Jan and Feb before - hopefully - the vaccine finally starts to turn the corner for us all.

there are over 200 vaccination sites now open in all parts of the UK.

The jab "offers promise of a greater year ahead" but until it is fully rolled out, he says "we must keep doing what it takes to protect our NHS and protect those we love".

I live just inside Stockport boundaries and you can't compare it to a city the size of Bristol. If we were to drop a tier then everyone from surrounding districts would pile in a force the rate up. Noticed that Didsbury isn't in a great place at the moment compared to Gatley, Cheadle, Heald Green so if we were to drop in to tier 2 then the infection would rise. I know it's an unpopular decision but I think it the right one at the moment. Want to see the whole of GM dropping to under 100 / 100k and then we can move

It’s so tough on businesses.

The government would say that if they divide the lines into smaller segments, that there will be far more T2-T3 cross over, as it’ll create further borders and make it more complicated.

But that does nothing for you if you’re a landlord in Stockport.

My local were convinced we were T2 after today and have spent the week preparing Christmas decorations and making sure it’s even more Covid safe than before.

I know the landlord and he’s gutted.

That is a fair point but you could also apply the same argument to the surrounding areas of Wilmslow currently stuck in tier 3. I know people who have been travelling to Wilmslow, Poynton, Alderley etc from Manchester for meals.

And Trafford which is virtually Tier 1 levels
Actually as of last night (see my GM scoreboard) Trafford (Pop 121) is right now behind both Tameside (97) and Stockport (108). But all three are well below Rochdale (208).

Cheshire East is also higher than those lower 3 in GM.

We’re getting off topic now but it’s very much a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world... as the Kinks said.

Where abouts are you?

It is what I have been saying in here endlessly since August when we saw it happen to Wigan. It is why Cheshire East is in trouble right now.

Tiers are like sieves that leak the virus to less restricted areas around them.

Unfortunately only nationwide rules are effective. And we will almost certainly be in them by early January if the next 2 weeks go as most fear.

Perhaps common sense will win out. Perhaps. But Jan/Feb are the critical months as with luck they are the last ones when the vaccine is starting to come on stream and the virus has chance to run amok and overwhelm an already stretched NHS every year at that time

But they are by far the most dangerous 8 weeks of the pandemic by happenstance of timing.

This is a winter peak virus and we were coming out of that in wave 1 and building up to it in wave 2. Any wave 3 will be in the middle of it and that is the problem.

Scotland data:

30 deaths - well down on last Thursday

858 cases at 4.4% positive

1012 in hospital (down 19)

50 on ventilator beds (up 1)

The R is believed up to just over 1.

Dr Paul Chrisp, director of the centre for guidelines at NICE, said: "While there is insufficient evidence to recommend vitamin D for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19 at this time, we encourage people to follow government advice on taking the supplement throughout the winter period"
