Never mind the drivers' lunch, what now happens to all the lorries with perishable goods? What about food from the EU? - if that's in an EU lorry will they still come here knowing they might get home, or if the food is brought here by a British truck it's not going to come if the lorry is stuck here and can't collect it. At least we can start into the Brexit stockpiles in warehouses - if we can find a truck to get it.

I agree - it was just something that hadn't occurred to me and of course something that adds to the time to cross the border as its something else to check. Fancy going halves with me on a secret bacon butty smuggling route into Normandy? Sort of B-Day.

If you are a remainer and I'm guessing you must be and you think brexit will be carnage why delay it till we are stable from the virus. What's the point. Economically we ain't going to be over the effects of the virus for years.
Forget teeth. If I've got to have both legs broken, I'd rather have one at a time and manage on crutches than both at once and be in a wheelchair.

You'd have wanted D day in 1942 (specially for those still stuck in WW2 mode). But there are umpteen analogies to illustrate "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts": like a hole. Would you rather be in a six foot hole, get out and fall in another, or be in one twelve foot deep?

And in less than 24 hours the UK has collapsed. Unable to import or export food.... politicians calling for an extension to the transition period.Companies on the verge of collapsing losing 100's of thousands of £ overnight... questions over whether the vaccine will be allowed in .

More countries closing their borders to us by the minute (Denmark now)

From brexit ? No they aint. Most haven't noticed any difference. If your talking about the virus then doh that wouldn't be eleviated from delaying brexit. Brexit is the second tooth. The first one is fucked and getting pulled as we speak.
Brexit and Covid are not like having fucking teeth pulled where you go "ow" and get on with your day. The country is on life support and it's being plunged into a critical operation of trying to resolve life out of the EU, probably with fuck all to show for it due to a no-deal Brexit. You're asking the country to take another hammer blow when it's already on its knees.

This has given the Eu the upper hand ... and has shown the UKs vulnerability. We will get royally screwed over now.

nothing like holding a gun to the EU's head then turning it on yourself by revealing a new strain of Covid that gives them every opportunity to pull one on us and shut the borders so we're fucked. Like an episode of Sherlock where you pull a gun on Moriarty and half a dozen red dots appear on your forehead. At least I'm cynical enough to accept that the Tories have probably pulled this stunt to ensure a no-deal and blame Covid and therefore "the people" for bringing down a deal.

No. It has demonstrated to many of those that didn’t believe it that the EU has always had the upper hand. They already knew they did as did our government but the government was relying on keeping enough people in the dark for long enough to deliver the shit deal that they will be forced to accept. A deal that would be sold as a great victory because we would probably have got another small concession on fish. Reality has struck a little early and has screwed the plan.

Hold on there.

The cross-channel frontier is closed to accompanied freight. Most of our freight is not accompanied. What they are doing is stopping drivers, not stopping freight.

The majority of our freight comes in via container ships, not via cross channel ferries or the tunnel. A single container vessel with 500 containers on board is the equivalent of a two mile tailback of container lorries.

This is by no means to suggest that everything in the garden is rosy. But there is no need to start stockpiling food, for instance.

No doubt the zealots and headbangers will say “what’s the problem, then,” and as I say there plainly is a problem. But it’s a 5 on the scale of HMG fuck ups, not a 9.

A bit of sense, thank you.

You should post in here more often.

It's fresh food that is the issue, and will kick in in several days from now.

Sainsbury's have said lettuce, citrus fruit, salad, broccoli, cauliflower.

Thanks for the invitation, but I’ve better things to do than waste my time arguing with zealots and halfwits. Every now and then I think something I say might make a difference so I post it. Respect to those that engage with the headbanger faction, but it’s not for me.

Correct. Sorry to use jargon, but unitised freight - 1 lorry 1 container - makes up about 40% of our imports. That’s why I said the majority of our imports come in bulk. It’s a substantial minority that comes in on the back of a lorry.

The poster I replied to however said we couldn’t import any food, which is an exaggeration. If the border opens again in 48 hours there should be no problem - many supermarkets have been quietly building up stock. If it doesn’t, shortages of some fresh foods will be seen probably between Christmas and New Year.

Sainsbury’s has spoken. Stockpiling has been going on a while to beat the 1st Jan deadline so that has helped in the short term.

All products for the Great British Christmas lunch are already in the country and we have plenty of these. We are also sourcing everything we can from the UK and looking into alternative transport for product sourced from Europe. If nothing changes we will start to see gaps over the coming days on lettuce, salad leaves, cauliflowers, broccoli, citrus fruit – all of which are imported from EU at this time of year. We hope UK and French govts can come to a solution that prioritises immediate passage of produce and food End‘

Aaargh, jargon!

Yes, it's not a surprise that the supermarkets spotted that the end of the year might be a bit awkward!

The Tories act in self interest and self preservation over anything else.

They’re desperate to hang on to power no matter what.

They’re the only party that does this and will bend themselves into whatever shape they think to stay in power.

Whether that’s conservatism, liberalism, nationalism etc. They don’t care, name it and they’ll do it to stay in power.

It wasn’t always this way, whatever people think of her Thatcher would at least stick to her guns no matter what people thought.

Johnson is the worst of the lot, he’s a political chameleon. London Mayorship? He’ll go liberal and progressive, pro EU. Wants the Brexit vote? He’ll try and channel a weird version of Churchill to get there.

No integrity, no accountability, no proper planning, no fucking hope.
