I have two sisters who live there both would come home tomorrow. They both live in Perth and totally isolated from all the joys we have in Europe.

Really?
I'd give my right arm to move to Australia at the moment.

A partial telling to put it very mildly indeed.

They failed to act on Christmas when days or even weeks ahead of that paper, the numbers alone showed that the planned relaxation was likely disastrous. Just for instance, an unprecedented joint editorial in BMJ was written and ignored. All without any knowledge on new strains.

They only acted when they absolutely could not avoid it a moment longer.

When they did finally act, they only did it in areas most severely affected right now, ensuring that further spread will occur before another, inevitable wider clampdown. Even you posted that there will be a boxing day tier 4 everywhere. If that's the case, why not announce it now? The contrast with Scotland is telling.
A while back people were moaning that things were announced too far in advance now people are moaning news rules are being announced to near. FFS damned if they do and damned if they don't. Personally we need a lockdown as we did in March / April until beginning of February. That will kill what little business I have left and will do untold damage to the economy. However without such strict rules in place this country will become a shit storm. I also think sports should be cancelled and if this fucks up the PL, Olympics, Euros etc then it's tough. Hopefully by the beginning of February with so many more people vaccinated and infections driven down we can slowly reopen things throughout February and March when even more people will have had their jabs.

Scotland has 14% of the new strain but this is some days old and they think it will be higher now. Nicola Sturgeon.

We face a new period of exponential growth.

So 'we have to act NOW to stop it'.

Hence all the mainland into level 4 for 3 weeks from Boxing Day.

Ireland have done similar.

As a case study for those claiming lock downs don't work, Ireland is instructive.

The acted quicker on 2nd wave and drive down numbers much lower.

Their death rate is currently a fraction of ours.

Again, now, they're acting way ahead of when we did.

Just announce everyone into tier four on boxing day ffs , everyone needs to know what they are doing and can make plans , you just know he is trying to look popular rather than caring to stop the spread

How much warnings does he need , learning from the cock up at the start should have happened

Sadly the England hospital deaths offer no comfort. They are much the biggest week to week increase since April.

This is not now just about more cases. Deaths are escalating now as well.

I am starting to fear after the London ventilator data I posted last night and now these rising England deaths going up faster than I feared that this new strain might yet prove more dangerous than we know.

Which will make any delays now criminal let alone stupid.

We all know Boris will be on TV announcing a lockdown at some point.

What we all need to know is why England yet again will be way behind everyone else.

Because days of dithering in present circumstances are days of death sentences.

No politician will ever survive that as his legacy. Whatever party they are in.

Wish I shared your optimism.
I dont trust a word Boris says anymore.
The mans a clown.
The trouble is he is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. Trying to keep the population safe, take pressure of the NHS and at the same time save jobs and keep the economy going is no easy task.

He is getting advise from all quarters including the wishy washer Labour leader, I wouldn’t have his job for all the tea (viruses) in China.

Why would anyone want sports cancelling when they have been done so safely with barely any issues. Supermarkets should be shut before they look at professional sports and revert to delivery only.

Of the 405 England hospital deaths - age ranges are:

20 - 39 (3), 40 - 59 (19), 60 - 79 (140) Over 80 (243)

Regions 82 Midlands, 78 NE/Yorkshire, 64 North West, 56 South East, 53 London, 49 East. As you see people are dying everywhere in England now in big numbers

I agree it is a tough ask and get the questions of balancing different things.

But the data is very clear. Scientists say we need this. Other nations are doing it quickly. Public opinion seems to suggest most think it is necessary.

They have to know by now that delay hoping not to have to do it is fatal. Literally.

You can always roll back and try to save jobs. And revive the economy.

Death is death and there is no way you come back from that.

Surely this is not a choice?

We are squandering by the hour the best weapon we have to fight this. Swift decisive action. Again and again we have seen that saves nothing and makes things worse.

This is not now just about more cases. Deaths are escalating now as well.

If deaths are escalating then the response is already far too late. Some basic sums:

Doubling time for positive tests has been observed as 6 days for the new variant.

Positives reported today reflect infections happening about one doubling ago (incubation period + test reporting).

Deaths will typically take another ~2 doublings from a positive test.

Even if we impose a total lock down right away, we can already expect very roughly
- reported cases to at least double
- deaths to increase 8 fold

These are from infections that have already happened.

Exponential growth is inexorable, and our leaders have not learned their lessons.

Caveats: All only for the new variant cases, not the total (though the majority in London already are). Assuming disease severity unchanged and the early data on the new variant holds up.

I was always of the opinion that back in March we should have closed our borders and not allow idiots to pop off on holiday. I also would advocate an all or nothing tier policy, so whatever area needs the highest tier we all go into that tier. As London is in tier 4 every other area of the UK (possibly not NI) should also be in the same tier. Once the highest area of concern has fulfilled the tier 3 criteria then we all go into tier 3. That would stop people nipping next door to a lower tier so that they can have a bevy or two.

All those calling the not closing the border should take note of the chaos closing the borders have caused last 48 hours. We just cannot do it at the moment.
Agreed but it should have been done in February for a month with pretty much everyone being told to stay at home. Lock the country down properly for 1 month and then go from there with anyone arriving having to quarantine for 2 weeks. It could have and should have been done but as usual those stable doors are being bolted a little too late.
